The South Broadway Library (1025 Broadway Blvd. SE) presents a special family movie screening this Saturday, Dec. 23. In keeping with the Christmas spirit, the film is 1983’s perennial holiday classic A Christmas Story. The film is based on radio humorist Jean Shepherd’s semi-fictional 1966 book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. (So this is kind of a literate event.) The film is free to the public and will show from 3:30 to 5pm in the library’s Youth Section. All children must be accompanied by an adult. According to the library’s website, kids are welcome to wear their jammies. (Adults too, I’m assuming.)

Between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the historic KiMo Theatre is gifting Albuquerque with a Family Film Festival. All eight of the Harry Potter films—two per day—will be shown on the theater’s big screen. On Wednesday, Dec. 27, it’s Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone at 1pm and Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets at 5pm. On Thursday, Dec. 28, it’s Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban at 1pm and Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire at 5pm. On Friday, Dec. 29, it’s Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix at 1pm and Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince at 5pm. Things wrap up on Saturday, Dec. 30 with Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 at 1pm and Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 at 5pm. This magical marathon is the final event in the KiMo’s yearlong 90th anniversary celebrations. All films are free and open to the public. The KiMo is located at 423 Central Ave. NW.

Local art house institution The Guild Cinema will close for the Christmas holiday. The theater (and its microscopic staff of employees) are taking a break this year, shutting the doors from Sunday, Dec. 24 through Tuesday, Dec. 26. The theater will reopen on Wednesday, Dec. 27, with French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s 2001 cult-classic romantic fantasy Amelie and the folk/roots musical documentary Extraordinary Ordinary People (featuring Albuquerque’s own Rahim AlHaj). If you feel the need for cinematic sustenance on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, don’t worry. The chain theaters will be open regular hours and are stuffed with new films—some hitting screens on Wednesday, Dec. 20, some coming out on Friday, Dec. 22 and a handful opening on Christmas Day itself, Dec. 25.
