New Mexico PBS and the Santa Fe Art Institute present a special free preview screening of the Academy Award-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro on Thursday, Jan. 11. This “Indie Lens” pop-up screening will take place at the Santa Fe Art Institute (1600 St. Michael’s Dr.) starting at 6pm. The film reconstructs famed author James Baldwin’s unfiinished 1979 book Remember This, which was intended to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of Baldwin’s three close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. This timely examination of race in America will be accompanied by a Civil Rights era photo collection (including portraits of James Baldwin) and a post-film discussion led by SFAI Works manager Kourtney Andar. Given that Martin Luther King Jr. Day hits this coming Monday, Jan. 15, it’s no real surprise that I Am Not Your Negro is in high demand right now. If you can’t do Santa Fe, New Mexico PBS presents a second screening of the film on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the African American Performing Arts Center (310 San Pedro NE) located on Albuquerque’s EXPO New Mexico Fairgrounds. There is an opening reception at 6pm followed by a 6:30 screening. After the screening economic development strategist and governmental advisor (to Mayor Berry and Gov. The New Mexico Film Foundation, through its Tale Writers program, presents a series of screenwriting workshops starting this weekend, Jan. 13 and 14. Aaron Leventman (programmer for the Santa Fe Film Festival and programming consultant for the Albuquerque Film and Media Experience) is teaching the first workshop, titled “Screenwriting 101.” Melinda M. Snodgrass (story editor on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) will take over the next workshop on Jan. 27 and 28, titled “Breaking the Story.” Future workshops will be held, twice a month, through the end of April. Thanks to a grant from New Mexico Arts, each screenwriting workshop only costs $75. All workshops are being held at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design Film School, Room 219.
