Media for the Mix Age—Describing their genre as “neo-vaudeville,” the performers of Immortelle will be at the Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE) this Friday night mixing up the worlds of film projection, theater and live music. Inspired by the classics of “original sinema” the performance promises to take the audience to “a place reminiscent of the silent film era.” Doors open at 10 p.m. for this intriguing after-hours mash-up. The evening starts with 15 minutes of local short films, followed by the interactive Immortelle performance and then closing out with a live local band. Tickets are $7 in advance or $8 at the door.

Local Shorts—Local Shorts 3 is back at the Lobo Theatre this weekend, bringing us a third year in a row of great local short film/video work. The festivities get underway at noon on Saturday, August 27, at Zinc Bistro where a “Meet the Filmmakers” reception will kick off the day. The first session of films, featuring 13 different works by Dan Vaitkus, Tamarind King, Rudy J. Miera and others, will take place from 2 to 4:45 p.m. This first session is suitable for all ages. The second session of films, featuring a dozen different works by Santiago Meyer, Kate Brown, David Quintana and others, will take place from 6 to 8:40 p.m. This later session contains some material that may not be appropriate for children. On Sunday, August 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. the festival will make a return appearance, spotlighting the top films in the Moviemaker and Audience Choice catagories. Tickets for the catered Filmmakers reception at Zinc are $8 per person. Tickets for the “Local Shorts” screenings (good for all three sessions) are $5 per person. Jason Returns—Horror film aficionados should note that local filmmaker Scott Phillips (The Stink of Flesh) has just seen the publication of his first novel. The book, Church of the Divine Psychopath, is the first in a series of gory Friday the 13th spin-off novels being published by England's Black Flame Books. Church imagines a cult that has taken up residence near the infamous Crystal Lake and is actively worshipping the reanimated corpse of creepy killer Jason Voorhees. Just last weekend, Phillips went out to Los Angeles where he signed copies of the novel at retail horror mecca Dark Delicacies.
