The 48 Hour Film Project in Albuquerque is launching a brand new, horror-based competition. Registration is now open for the 48 Hour Film Horror Project. The event will take place the weekend of Oct. 18 through 20. Teams will gather at the uPublic Studios (907 Third Street NW) on Friday, Oct. 18. A random draw will determine the category in which each team must work (from “found footage” to “creature feature”). Teams will also be given a line of dialogue, a prop and a character that must be included in each film. Teams will have just two days to write, shoot, edit and premiere their short horror masterpieces. All finished films will be screened on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the KiMo Theatre. Reel World: Get In Motion Get In Motion
Motion is an annual conference the brings together the brightest and most creative minds working in the motion graphics field. This weekend, Oct. 4-7, the seventh annual outing will take place at the KiMo Theatre. If you work as a professional motion graphics artist, I assume you already know about it and are signed up for all sorts of lectures, workshops, demos and Q&A sessions. This year, however, organizers are offering two big events that are free and open to the public. On Friday, Oct. 4, they’ll host “Breaking Bad: Withdrawal.” Actor/comedian Steven Michael Quezada will take to the stage to talk about the post-production aspects of the just-wrapped series—from motion graphics to editing to visual effects. Quezada will be joined on stage by art director Paula Dal Santo and construction coordinator William Gilpin. The event will take place at KiMo Theatre from 7:30 to 8:30pm. On Saturday, Oct. 5, there will be another special public event called “FACEOFF: The After Effects Challenge.” Host Elaine Montoya and After Effects experts Trish and Chris Meyer will follow three teams through a 60-minute challenge to create a 5-to-15-second motion graphic. There will be live music by DJ Hijinx, and the event will be streamed online to a global audience. The event runs from 7:45 to 10pm. The Santa Fe Center for Spiritual Living will present the premiere of the hour-long documentary Homesick: Living with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities this Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2pm. The film explores the innovative solutions that people living with MCS have devised in their search for homes that don’t make them sick. Filmmaker Susan Abod and co-writer Ann McCampbell MD will be on hand for a post-film Q&A on this controversial subject. (MCS is not recognized by the American Medical Association.) On Tuesday, Oct. 8, film historian/critic Jeff Berg will appear at the Reel New Mexico film screenings to present a compilation of great clips from classic Westerns shot right here in New Mexico and comment on their place in film history. Berg’s been doing this sort of thing for several years now and has built quite a reputation as the expert on movies made in New Mexico. The screening/lecture gets underway at 7pm.
