SFFF Crowns Winners—Judging by the crowded theaters I was sitting in, this last weekend's fifth annual Santa Fe Film Festival was a smashing success. In addition to all the great independent films, documentaries and foreign features, this year's SFFF featured the finals of the Governor's Cup Film Challenge. Sponsored by the governor and the State Film Office, the Governor's Cup oversaw five film festivals in five different regions of New Mexico. These regional festivals were held over the summer, and chose the best local short films in three categories: Narrative, Documentary and Student. Statewide more than 150 films were submitted by aspiring New Mexico filmmakers. The best films from each of the five regions were sent to Santa Fe, and were put into a trio of film programs. There, a group of judges chose the three best films overall. Albuquerque filmmaker Jeff Drew captured First Place for his narrative short “Allison.” Drew was awarded the Governor's Cup trophy, a $500 cash prize and an editing package at two local production companies. Second place went to Chris Kientz from Las Cruces for his computer-animated short “Raven Tales.” Third Place went to the documentary “Nuestras Acequias” by Doug Crawford of Arroyo Seco.
Alibi extends its heartiest congratulations to these enterprising filmmakers. We hope to see more from you in years to come.
