Shootout: Take Two– The Duke City Shootout continues into this weekend. Last Saturday’s shotgun start launched seven teams of filmmakers on a weeklong race to cast, shoot and edit seven short films. The films will premiere at this weekend’s gala final event. Until then, however, the Shootout still has a few surprises up its sleeves. Thursday, July 25 –Beginning at 10 a.m., the Insomnia Lounge, located in the ABQ Hyatt’s Atrium Ballroom, will start demonstrating various new technologies in the fields of animation and digital filmmaking. At 3 p.m., there will be a panel discussion on “Women in Entertainment.” Ellen Sandler (writer/producer of “Everybody Loves Raymond”), Tracy Mercer (VP of development for Morgan Freeman’s Relations Entertainment) and Liz Langston (cofounder of the 48-Hour Film Festival) will be in attendance. The panel will take place in the Insomnia Lounge. At 7 p.m., filmmaker Joe Conti will premiere his New Mexico-shot horror/adventure film Army of the Dead . This free event takes place at the KiMo Theatre in downtown Albuquerque.

Friday, July 26 –From 1 to 3 p.m. in the Hyatt’s Insomnia Lounge, there will be a presentation on “The State of Animation in New Mexico.” Animators Jonas Diamond (Smiley Guy Studios), Steve Hoban (CopperHeart Animation), Chris Landreth (director of Academy Award-winning short “Ryan”), Chris Keintz (writer/producer/director of “Raven Tales”), Torin Lucas (CEO of Thunderbird games), Gerald McDermott (animator of “Arrow to the Sun”) and Jeff Hobbs (animator and rotoshop creator) will be in attendance. At 3 p.m., Insomnia will host a Ralph Bakshi showcase, honoring the noted animator behind Wizards, Fritz the Cat and American Pop . Bakshi himself will be at the National Hispanic Cultural Center at 7 p.m. to accept the newly minted Cine-Spirit Award. A Q&A session with the filmmaker will be followed by the debut screening of the first animated work created specifically for the Duke City Shootout by a team of award-winning animators. Tickets for this special event are on sale at the NHCC box office (1701 Fourth Street NW) for $13.

Saturday, July 29 –Panel discussions continue at the Insomnia Lounge with a look at “The Future of Distribution” at 10 a.m. and “Making No Money Look Good” at 1 p.m. The Shootout’s Gala Premiere Night wraps up the festival at 7 p.m. at the Albuquerque Convention Center’s Kiva Auditorium. All seven films from the Duke City Shootout will be screened, along with the local winner of the 48-Hour Film Project. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at ticketmaster.com.
