Everybody’s (yes, everybody’s) favorite holiday film, 1983’s A Christmas Story, will grace the big screen at the historic KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW) on Friday, Dec. 19, at 8pm. This classic tale of a young boy’s wish for “an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle” is based on the memoirs of humorist Jean Shepherd. It’s easy enough to find on TV this time of year, but it belongs in a movie theater. Tickets are $4 for students, $6 for seniors and $8 for adults. They’re available at the KiMo box office or in advance online.
The Albuquerque Film and Music Experience is promoting next year’s third annual film festival with a “Get Smart (Phone) Movie Contest.” Filmmakers worldwide are asked to submit a 7-to-10-minute short in any genre. As the title suggests, films must be shot on hand-held devices such as iPhones, Androids and tablets. Judging will be based on originality, story line, cinematography and editing. First prize includes a $500 cash award plus “a ton of promotion including an exclusive radio interview on AFME on AIR.” Early submission deadline is Friday, Dec. 19. You have until then to submit your film for only $20. After that the fee goes up to $25 per film. After Jan. 16 it jumps to $45. Final deadline to submit is Feb. 20. For complete information on how to submit your work, go to abqfilmexperience.com.
Albuquerque’s own Dark Matters Film Festival is returning this Saturday, Dec. 20, with its third annual “Horror Bites” collection. In case you didn’t know, the winter solstice takes place on Dec. 21. That makes Dec. 20 the shortest—and therefore darkest—day of the year. What better time to get over to Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE) and catch a day-long selection of short horror, sci-fi and dark fantasy films from around the globe? At 4pm things kick off with the sci-fi/fantasy block. At 6pm it’s an entire block of animation. At 8pm you get a whole bunch of horror. Tickets are $7 per programming block or $15 for all three. That’s a bargain for an amazing collection of films representing countries from America to Spain to the Philippines. If you still haven’t had your fill after all of that, Dark Matters will be cosponsoring the Alibi Midnight Movie Madness screening at 10:30pm. That will feature the supernatural Australian thriller The Babadook. Admission for that film is $8 general admission or $6 students. To get you in the mood for all these movies, Dark Matters is hosting a special Dark Beer Party on Friday, Dec. 19, at Bird of Paradise Liquors (5409 Gibson SE) starting at 6:30pm. Mix and mingle with fellow horror fans while sampling some of Bird of Paradise’s incredible selection of seasonal brews. What’s the matter? You’re not afraid of the dark, are you?
