The Annual 48 Hour Film Project returns to KiMo Theatre this Thursday and Friday with Go Fast, Go Wild. This series of three screenings (July 17 at 6pm, July 18 at 6 and 8:30pm) will include every single short film shot during the Albuquerque leg of this year’s 48 Hour Film Project (which took place July 13 through 15). Teams of local filmmakers had just two days to write, shoot and edit their short films. The results run a gamut of styles and subjects. Tickets are $10 per block or $24 for all three. If you aren’t in the mood to wade through the dozens of shorts (and if you weren’t on one of the teams, odds are you aren’t), you may want to hold out for the Friday, July 25, “Best of” screening. The top films, as decided by a panel of judges, will be screened that night starting at 7:30pm. The top winner of that night will go on to compete against other national 48 Hour winners. KiMo Theatre continues its ongoing tributes to great actors with the new film series The Magnificent Meryl. Actress Meryl Streep kicks off a string of fantastic films, starting with her Academy Award-winning 1982 film Sophie’s Choice. Streep stars as a survivor of World War II Nazi concentration camps whose future happiness is endangered by the ghosts of her past. Sophie’s Choice will screen Sunday, July 20, at 2pm. Tickets are $7 general admission or $5 students and seniors.. Future installments of Magnificent Meryl will include Out of Africa (July 27), Postcards from the Edge (Aug. 3), The Bridges of Madison County (Aug. 10), The Hours (Aug. 24), The Manchurian Candidate (Aug. 31), Julie and Julia (Sept. 7) and The Iron Lady (Sept. 14).

The New Mexico Film Foundation is partnering with Filmstock Film Festival for a groundbreaking Actor’s Showcase, set to take place Sept. 5-6 in Albuquerque. The top 20 actors selected to participate will have a chance to do auditions with directors on stage in front of a live audience. The winning actor and actress will then be featured in commercials, screen stills and red carpet interviews at the next three Filmstock events in Colorado, Utah and Arizona. If you’re a local actor interested in getting a big break, however, you need to act quickly. To enter you must submit your 1-minute video audition, head shot and resume by Thursday, July 17.

Not content to simply assist local actors, the New Mexico Film Foundation has also partnered with Lockheed Martin for the $5,000 “… and what now?” filmmaking contest. The winning director will receive a $5,000 grant to produce a 3 to 5-minute film on the subject of human space exploration. Lockheed Martin is a prime contractor building NASA’s next generation spacecraft, the Orion. The Orion’s first test flight will take place later this year. Lockheed Martin will share the winning “… and what now?” film as part of its public outreach program. The submission process closes out on Aug. 15. All you need to do is send a one-page treatment for an idea that deals with the theme of human deep space exploration. The New Mexico Film Foundation and a panel of space industry experts led by astronaut Bruce McCandless II will evaluate the submissions and choose a winner.
