This Saturday, May 2, is Free Comic Book Day, and Alibi is doing its part to get you in the mood. The annual celebration of all things printed and thumb-throughable is held at comic book shops across America. There will be special sales, costume contests, guest artist signings and, of course, free comic book giveaways. On Friday and Saturday night, Alibi Midnight Movie Madness will be at Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE) for a special screening of the 1993 animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. This theatrical spin-off of Bruce Timm’s stylish and popular TV show “Batman: The Animated Series” finds Batman implicated in a series of murders committed by a mysterious vigilante assasssin. The screening starts at 10:30pm both nights. There will be door prize drawings courtesy of Lobo Anime & Comics. In addition local artist David Harrigan will be producing an original, limited-edition poster print based on the film. It will be available for purchase in the theater lobby. Admission is $8 general admission or $6 students.
Reel World: Quest For Vision Fest Quest For Vision Fest
The fifth annual Outdoor Vision Fest comes to Santa Fe University of Art and Design this Friday, May 1, from 8:45 to 10:45pm. OVF is an annual public event held at SFUAD’s Visual Arts Center that features “environmental projections and outdoor art installations of design, animation, full-motion video, video mapping, motion graphics and interactive multimedia” created by SFUAD students. This year’s Outdoor Vision Fest is expected to feature some 50 installations. Among the featured work from across all university departments is “Simulacra” (a dance/music/studio art/film performance), a display of theremins that use audience brainwaves to capture input, and a live music and interactive media installation featuring The Maya Spectra and VJ Buran. The festival is free, self-guided and open to the public. New Mexico labor and film industry organizations have partnered to kick off the first annual Santa Fe Labor Film Festival this May Day weekend. Everything gets started at 5pm on Friday, May 1, with an opening night gala, a dinner and a screening of the 2014 Lionsgate biopic Cesar Chavez starring Michael Peña. Events pick up again on Saturday morning at 10am with an open casting call for cars. That’s right, you can audition your personal vehicle to appear in a locally shot motion picture. That’s followed by brunch and several more film screenings, including The Hand That Feeds (11am), a “Labor Shorts” program (2pm) and Schoolidarity (5pm). Sunday starts with a workshop on how to become a film crew union member (10am). Screenings of Desert Rose (11am), Salt of the Earth (2pm) and Shadows of Liberty (5pm) close out the weekend. All events take place at the Center for Progress and Justice (1420 Cerrillos Rd. in Santa Fe). Admission is on a donate-what-you-wish basis.
