The newly reanimated Santa Fe Film Festival returns May 1 through 4. This year’s theme is “Dream Awake.” More than 36 dreamy films will screen during the four-day event. There will be a grand total of eight short film programs, including On the Nature of Hotness: GLBT Shorts and The Horror! The Horror! Shorts. Among the documentaries are Moving From Emptiness: The Life and Art of a Zen Dude and I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole. Special guests are scheduled to include Jessie Bridges (a singer-songwriter who happens to be the daughter of actor Jeff Bridges), casting directors April Webster and David Rapaport, actor Harry Lloyd (who’s working on the new “Manhattan” TV series) and producer Michael Fitzgerald (The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada). Parties, panels, talks and discussions will take place throughout the weekend. All events will be happening at the Jean Cocteau Cinema (418 Montezuma Ave.) and the Center for Contemporary Arts (1050 Old Pecos Trail).

Reel World: Go Fourth Go Fourth

As true Star Wars fans know, May 4 has been designated Star Wars Day. It was the day on which the original 1977 film was released, and it allows people to wander around saying, “May the fourth be with you.” The mad geniuses behind the “Geeks Who Drink” pub quiz are celebrating this most holy of days with another movie-themed night. Starting at 8pm on Sunday, May 4, O’Niell’s (4310 Central SE) will host a “galactic-sized” Star Wars trivia event. There will be drink specials, costume contests and prizes galore. Plus, all of the questions will center around the original three films in the Star Wars saga (Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi). So no questions at all about Jar-Jar Binks! Teams are limited to a six-person max with a $5 admission fee for each player.

Reel World: Comic Booked Comic Booked

This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day. Comic book stores all over Albuquerque (and the world, for that matter) will be handing out tons of free comic books specially published for the event. There will be costume contests, raffles, sales, special guests and all manner of comic book-related fun. (Check your friendly neighborhood comic book store for details.) To celebrate this annual event, Alibi is sponsoring a special Midnight Movie Madness event. Once you’ve made the rounds, gathered up all your free comics and read through them all, head on over to Guild Cinema in Nob Hill (3405 Central NE). Starting at 10:15pm, we’ll be screening parts 1 and 2 of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. This epic animated feature from DC Entertainment is an adaptation of Frank Miller’s legendary 1986 comic book of the same name. Tickets for this double-feature are $10 general admission and $8 students. We’ll be giving away plenty of cool door prizes courtesy of Stranger Factory and Bubonicon.
