If you’re one of those rare individuals who loves both extreme cardiovascular activities and sitting around watching movies, then there’s an event aimed at both ends of your character coming to UNM’s Rodey Hall this Thursday, Jan. 24. Starting at 7 p.m., it’s the local premiere of the award-winning documentary feature Bicycle Dreams. Director-producer Stephen Auerbach has created an in-depth look at the grueling Race Across America (RAAM) in which riders must contend with “searing desert heat, agonizing mountain climbs and endless stretches of open road” on a 3000 mile trek across the continent. The Albuquerque screening, which serves as a benefit for the Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico, will feature a special guest speaker. Longtime endurance racer Lisa Dougherty of Los Alamos will be competing in her first RAAM this summer and will talk to audience members about the experience. Professional, New Mexico-based stuntman Kurly Tlapoyawa—who appears in the just-released Arnold Schwarzenegger movie The Last Stand (not to mention Gamer, Crank: High Voltage, “Breaking Bad” and the upcoming Mark Wahlberg film 2 Guns)—will be teaching a “Film Fighter Stunt Workshop” on Saturday, Jan. 26. The workshop is designed to introduce actors and filmmakers to on-camera fighting techniques (selling hits, hand-to-hand combat and basic fight choreography). Cost is $40. Reel World: “Runway” Modeling “Runway” Modeling
The 11th season of “Project Runway” gets underway this Thursday, Jan. 24, on the Lifetime Network. This time around, New Mexicans have an opportunity to root for one of their own. Taos Pueblo-based designer Patricia Michaels is among the 16 contestants this season and is the first Native American to compete on the show. To celebrate, Legends Gallery in Santa Fe (125 Lincoln Ave., Suite 110) is hosting a special fashion preview and viewing party. Starting at 6:30 p.m., you can meet Michaels and get a look at her new clothing line. The “Project Runway” viewing starts at 7 p.m.
Reel World: Food For The Soul Food For The Soul
KNME is continuing its Community Cinema series Wednesday, Jan. 30, with a free screening at KiMo Theatre in Downtown Albuquerque. From 7 to 9 p.m., the local PBS affiliate will provide a sneak preview of the new documentary Soul Food Junkies. The film explores the black community’s deep-rooted love affair with soul food and shows how this culinary tradition lies at the heart of African American cultural identity. Community Cinema is a nationwide public education and civic engagement initiative featuring monthly screenings of films from the Emmy Award-winning PBS series “Independent Lens.”
