The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market gets underway next weekend. In addition to the usual (not to mention un usual) crowd of artists from around the globe, the market will play host to the U.S. premiere of a brand-new documentary from New Mexico filmmaker Mary Lance. Her film Blue Alchemy: Stories of Indigo will screen Wednesday, July 6, at 7 p.m. at the Lensic (211 W. San Francisco). Lance traveled all over the world—from India to Japan to Bangladesh to Nigeria to Mexico to El Salvador—to chart the history of a single color. Lance was not only able to trace the ancient roots of the distinctive shade, she found modern artisans who are reaching into their own cultural traditions to revive indigo production and uses for sustainable development. Starting off the evening is a performance by acclaimed Japanese flutist Kojiro Umezaki, a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s group, the Silk Road Ensemble. A special, limited number of $75 passes includes an invitation to a pre-screening party at the Coyote Cantina from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. as well as preferred seating at the Lensic. Reel World: Thunder Road On The Mother Road Thunder Road On The Mother Road
Be sure and join us this Saturday, July 2, at KiMo Theatre for the awesome holiday event known as the Hot Rod Hop. There will be a free classic car show on Central between Fourth and Fifth Streets from 3 to 6 p.m. Starting at 6, we’re moving inside the KiMo itself for “ Thunder Road on the Mother Road.” We’ll be screening the 1958 carsploitation classic Thunder Road starring Robert Mitchum. Before and after the movie, Burque Burlesque will be taking the stage for “Drag Strip”—a red-hot, retro-style stage show featuring several Albuquerque/Santa Fe burlesque performers. Denver’s own bump-and-grind queen Miss Orchid Mei is the evening’s special guest. Tickets for the movie/burlesque show are only $10.
