On Thursday, May 26, at 7pm the National Hispanic Cultural Center will host a free screening of the documentary Doñana, Four Seasons. The film, presented in Spanish with English subtitles, explores Spain’s Doñana National Park, a huge natural reserve spread through three provinces. Filmmaker Javier Molina Lamothe shows off the biodiversity and natural wealth of this ecological jewel by following the are through the cycle of seasons. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Tickets will be available at the NHCC’s Bank of America Theatre box office (1701 Fourth Street NW) starting one hour before showtime.
The South Broadway Cultural Center is getting into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a big way. For the next six weeks, SBCC will screen a series of superhero flicks en Español. The series launches on Friday, May 27, at 2pm with a screening of Thor staring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. On Friday, June 3, the featured film is Captain America: The Winter Soldier starring Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson. The Avengers is next on Friday, June 10. Future installments include Iron Man 3 (June 17), Ant-Man (June 24) and Guardians of the Galaxy (July 1). Tell me you don’t want to see Guardians of the Galaxy in Spanish. Movies on the Plaza returns this Friday, May 27, with a screening of the original Disney animated version of The Jungle Book from 1967. The movie starts at dusk (around 8:15pm) and admission is absolutely free! There will be food from various food trucks stationed around Civic Plaza starting at 5pm as well as a variety of local microbrews to check out. Gypsy jazz band Le Chat Lunatique will be playing music before the film starts to get the crowd excited. Some seating is available, but you’re welcome to bring your own chairs/blankets/etc. Dogs and bikes are welcome. Parking is available under Civic Plaza. Movies on the Plaza is run by the Albuquerque Convention Center and is made possible by a grant from Southwest Airlines obtained by the Downtown ABQ Mainstreet Initiative.
KiMo Theatre continues its countdown of the American Film Institute’s 100 Greatest Films with a screening of Roman Polanski’s 1974 crime drama Chinatown. Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway and John Huston star in this modern noir masterpiece about deceit, corruption and murder in 1937 Los Angeles. The film will show Saturday, May 28, at 2 and 6pm with an additional screening on Sunday, May 29, at 2pm. Tickets are $8 general admission and $6 students/seniors.
