Indie Q, the Albuquerque Film Office’s quarterly screening of local indie films, returns to the KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW) on Wednesday, Sept. 21, starting at 7pm. As always, the evening will feature a selection of short films, trailers and works in progress. Among the films being screened is Mukul Gadde’s award-winning short “Welcome Matt” starring Rob Tode, Ron Weisberg and Lauren Myers. Admission is free.
Reel World: Magnificent Magnificent
¡Cine Magnifico! Albuquerque’s homegrown Latino film festival returns for a fourth year, Sept. 15 through 18. Festivities kick off Thursday night with a VIP prescreening reception at the National Hispanic Cultural Center featuring tapas, wine, beer and Spanish guitar music courtesy of Robert Tanner. That starts at 6pm. It’s followed by the opening night film The Bride/La Novia at 7:15pm. This historical romantic tragedy is based on the 1932 novel Blood Wedding by Federico Garcia Lorca. Tickets for the film and reception are $20. Film-only tickets are $10. Another highlight of the weekend is a night of international short films at Guild Cinema (Saturday, 8:15pm). Festivalgoers can also catch the USA premiere of La Puerta Abierta/The Open Door, Marina Seresesky’s dark comedy about sex workers in urban Madrid (Saturday, 4:15pm at Guild). Families are invited to a free screening (Friday, 10am at NHCC) of the computer-animated film Atrapa la Bandera/Capture the Flag, in which a 12-year-old boy teams with his grandfather to stop some evil businessmen from destroying the American flag planted on the moon. On Friday night (6pm at Guild), the showcase film Truman will screen. It’s a drama/comedy from Argentina/Spain about a man who endures an intense, unexpected visit from an old friend and his dog. The film won multiple Goya awards earlier this year, including Best Film, Best Direction and Best Original Script. Chris Cashman, director of the soccer documentary Club Frontera, will host a Q&A Sunday, Sept. 18, at 2pm at the NHCC. (That’s another free screening.) Everything wraps up on Sunday at 6:30pm with the closing night film, Cómo Ganar Enemigos/ How to Win Enemies, at the Guild. This comedy from Argentina tells the tale of a mystery-reading Jewish lawyer who tries to hunt down the beautiful stranger who appears to have made off with his life savings. All events will take place at the Bank of America Theatre at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street SW) and Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE). Individual tickets run $5 (for the short films) to $10 (general admission). Four-film punch-cards are available for $25. Full Festival passes run $48.
