Management at the historic KiMo Theatre in Downtown Albuquerque is rushing full-force forward with plans to return the venue to its glory days, screening recent and classic feature films via a spanking-new HD digital projection system. This Saturday, Sept. 11, for example, marks the beginning of the Monty-Python-A-Thon. Catch Life of Brian starting at 8 p.m. and Monty Python and the Holy Grail beginning at 10 p.m. Tickets are $8 each film or $12 for the double-feature. … That takes care of the classic. Now for the new. On Sunday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m., KiMo will screen Bette Gordon’s indie crime drama Handsome Harry. The well-regarded film stars Steve Buscemi, Aidan Quinn, John Savage and Campbell Scott. It spins the story of a Vietnam vet investigating a decades-old crime for a former Navy buddy. The Two Worlds program returns to VSA North Fourth Art Center for the fifth year with three weekends’ worth of Native American film and theater. The festival launches this Saturday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 12, with a screening of short films by Native Americans. The Albuquerque premiere of Steven Judd’s “Search for the World’s Best Indian Taco” will be accompanied by two films made by students in the Two Worlds Creative Spirit New Mexico film workshop, Rhett Lynch’s “Edgar’s Journey” and Roberto A. Jackson’s “Indios Primeros.” Screenings will take place at VSA North Fourth (4904 Fourth Street NW). A suggested $5 donation gets you in the door.
Reel World: Movie Night Movie Night
The Range Café will host the sixth annual Jean DiGregory Outdoor Movie Night at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, at Loretto Park in Bernalillo. It’s a free, family-friendly event with popcorn, lemonade and other refreshments. Bring a chair or a blanket to sit on the grass. The title of the movie is being kept top secret, but is “guaranteed to be loved by all.” Attendees are advised to park across the street from the El Zócalo Historic Convent Event Center (264 S. Albuquerque Stunt Association and Albuquerque Kickboxing & Mixed Martial Arts are conducting an eight-week intensive Motion Picture Fighting Clinic starting Sunday, Sept. 12. Introduction to fighting; punches, kicks, shoulder rolls; camera angles; weapons; and fight sequences are just some of the topics covered. The Fighting Clinic will be taught by Hollywood Stuntmen’s Hall of Famer Michael Walter and sifu/coach Ray Yee. Classes run Sundays, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., until Oct. 31. Cost is $480.
