The Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe (418 Montezuma) will be hosting a special movie premiere on Friday, January 27, at 9pm. The brand-new indie horror film Dances With Werewolves will be screened with a number of cast and crew members in attendance. The film is written and directed by Donald F. Glut (Countess Dracula’s Orgy of Blood) & Dan Golden (Burial of the Rats). The story concerns a young woman who flees an abusive relationship only to fall victim to a moon-worshiping 600-year-old Romanian Countess. Enter a troubled paranormal investigator of Native American heritage who somehow finds himself in a deadly love triangle with a battered-woman werewolf. The low-budget horror flick features the final screen performance from Angus Scrimm (Phantasm). New Mexican actor Omar Paz Trujillo, who was born and raised in the Española Valley, is among those attending the screening. He plays Dr. Jay Nightraven, the “troubled paranormal investigator.” Also at the screening will be costars Tatiana DeKhtyar, Lauren Parkinson and Madeleine Wade. Singer-songwriter Kasey Lansdale (daughter of horror author Joe R. Lansdale) will be there with the film’s composer Don Preston (who served as keyboardist for Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention). The New Mexico Film Foundation is launching another new grant program aimed at shining a light on New Mexico’s young talent. The Tale Writers Scholastic Script Contest is aimed at New Mexico high school and college students who want to further their screenwriting abilities. Students are asked to submit a complete short screenplay of 10 pages or less with the theme of “New Mexico History.” Local professional screenwriters will judge the competition. Cash prizes will be handed out courtesy of the Governor’s Mansion Foundation. The top three finalists will receive an invitation to the New Mexico Film Foundation Gala at the Governor’s Mansion in April where their screenplays will be performed as staged readings. On Thursday, Jan. 26, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, in partnership with Instituto Cervantes, presents the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. Spanish surrealist Luis Buñuel’s 1970 film Tristana will be screened starting at 7pm. French actress Catherine Deneuve stars as a young woman in the 1930s, orphaned by the death of her mother, who is seduced by the aristocratic older man in whose guardianship she is entrusted. Nonetheless, she spurns his advances and falls in love with a struggling young painter. The drama is presented in Spanish with English subtitles. Admission is free.
