On Aug. 19, the National Hispanic Cultural Center is welcoming Los Van Van to Albuquerque. The group is one of Cuba’s biggest and best loved dance bands. To get audiences in the mood, NHCC is sponsoring a Cuban film series throughout the month of August. The films come courtesy of the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos. The series starts out on Thursday, Aug. 6, with Nosotros, La Música, Rogelio Paris’ 1964 documentary about the mid-century Cuban music scene. On Thursday, Aug. 13, it’s the 2009 film Eso Que Anda, which follows Los Van Van through the band’s 2006 Cuban tour. The festival wraps up on Thursday, Aug. 20, with Ian Padrón’s 2011 drama Habanastation. The film was shot in an actual slum in western Havana and addresses economic inequalities in Cuba as seen through the eyes of two children. Each of the films is free and open to the public. Tickets can be picked up at the NHCC one hour before each screening. The screenings start at 7pm and are presented in Spanish with English subtitles. The NHCC is located at 1701 Fourth Street SW. Elvis
The KiMo Theatre continues its Rock ‘n’ Roll on Film series this Saturday, Aug. 8, with another musical classic. Elvis: That’s the Way It Is is filmmaker Denis Sanders’ 1970 documentary about Elvis’ triumphant appearance at the Summer Festival in Las Vegas. The film, of course, features Elvis in his full-on, late period, white jumpsuit phase. It’s no ‘68 Comeback Special, but it’s Elvis in Vegas. I mean, c’mon. The film starts at 6pm. Admission is $8 general admission, $6 students and seniors.
