The elephant in the living room isn’t always metaphorical. In the multi-award-winning new documentary The Elephant in the Living Room, that burly beast is all too real. The film is written, produced and directed by Michael Webber—who, oddly enough, produced the Christian horror films Thr3e and House . Webber’s new film examines the controversial practice of keeping dangerous exotic animals as pets (and we aren’t talking ferrets here). Webber’s film concentrates largely on two people. One is Tim Harrison, a man who’s mission is to protect exotic animals and the public. The other is Terry Brumfield, a big-hearted guy who struggles to keep two pet African lions that he loves like family. The film will have its local premiere at the KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW) on Friday, April 8, at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the KiMo box office or through ticketmaster.com.

A trailer has just been released for the messianic, cyber-delic, social networking sci-fi film 0000 . The ultra-low-budget flick was shot here in Albuquerque by writer-director-producer Eddie Alcazar. The teaser trailer—available for viewing at Facebook—shows off the film’s moody, monochromatic 16mm photography. Congratulations are in order for Alcazar, his cast and crew. Looks like all the hard work is beginning to pay off. No word on when the film might be available for viewing, but the trailer has got our interests officially piqued. In the meantime, we’ll keep glued to Facebook for updates.

The New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase returns to Guild Cinema this May. This four-day festival of local films, both short and feature-length, comes to us courtesy of the New Mexico Film Office. Given Gov. Martinez’ distaste for anything as artsy as filmmaking, its seventh year may very well be among its last. In any case, if you’re an interested New Mexico filmmaker, this is an incredible opportunity to get your work shown in front of a receptive audience. The showcase is non-juried, and slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
