Award-winning author (The American Way of War) and filmmaker (Why We Fight) Eugene Jarecki will visit Albuquerque this weekend to introduce his new documentary The House I Live In. The film won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Shot in 20 states, The House I Live In takes a critical look at America’s war on drugs, relating the stories of individuals who have been impacted on many levels—from dealers to narcotics officers to inmates in federal prison. Jarecki will speak following the 8 p.m. screening on Friday, Nov. 9, at Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE).
Reel World: Bone Up On Your O’keeffe Bone Up On Your O’keeffe
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe is taking part in a nationwide celebration of the famed artist’s 125th birthday. Among the special events is a screening of painter / filmmaker Jill Sharpe’s short film “Bone Wind Fire.” The award-winning short is a meditation on the work of three artists: O’Keeffe, Emily Carr and Frida Kahlo. The film accompanies an exhibition of Sharpe’s oil paintings based on “exerpts and artifacts” from the film. “Bone Wind Fire” will be shown Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 1 and 6 p.m. in the museum’s education annex (123 Grant). This event is free and open to the public.
Reel World: Local Video Music Awards Local Video Music Awards
The worldwide 48 Hour Film Project has branched out into music videos. Thirteen cities—Albuquerque, Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Paris and Pittsburgh among them—participated in this year’s 48 Hour Music Video Project. Teams were given two days to produce music videos for local bands. Among the New Mexico musicians randomly paired with filmmakers were Nick Furious, Todd & The Fox, Sina Soul and Cali Shaw. The fruits of all this madcap collaboration will be revealed on Thursday, Nov. 8, at the KiMo Theatre. Starting at 7 p.m., the eight Duke City teams will be showing off their rockin’ (or country-ing or whatever) videos. Tickets are $8 and available at KiMoTickets.com. Following the award ceremony, there will be an after-party at Sister just down the block. Expect a cash bar and free appetizers from festival sponsor Range Cafe.
