Experiments in Cinema v6.3 got underway Wednesday, April 13, at Guild Cinema. The annual festival of experimental film/video—curated by UNM’s Bryan Konefsky—continues through Sunday, April 17 at both the Guild and UNM’s SouthWest Film Center. On Thursday, April 14, however, the festival takes a detour to the National Hispanic Cultural Center for an evening of events from 6 to 9 p.m. A collection of Spanish video art will be on display in the NHCC’s main gallery. In addition, the center will host the premiere of a new live work by Spanish experimental filmmaker / installation artist Rafaël. (He must be good, he’s only got one name.) Capping off this evening of fine experimental art displays will be an after-party at The Normal Gallery (1415 Fourth Street SW), featuring some awesome projections by local arts org Basement Films. All of the events on Thursday are free and open to the public.

From April 15 through 17, Albuquerque is joining up with more than 25 cities throughout the U.S. to host the newly minted Palestine Film Festival. This three-day showcase is sponsored by the American Association for Palestinian Equal Rights and will take place locally at The Filling Station (1024 Fourth Street SW). Features, shorts, documentaries and dramas will be screened, all in an effort to educate Americans on the situation facing Palestinians today. The fest gets underway on Friday at 7 p.m. with the 2008 Cannes Film Festival selection Salt of This Sea , a romantic drama about a working-class woman and her experiences traveling home to Palestine. There will be a post-film discussion led by writer/teacher Iris Keltz. Additional films, all followed by facilitated group discussions, start as 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the screenings is free to the public, although donations are gratefully accepted.

The historic KiMo Theatre in Downtown Albuquerque recently installed a brand-new, state-of-the-art digital projection system. In addition to the fine collection of opera and ballet telecasts the theater has been sponsoring, KiMo is slowly getting back in the classic movie game. The venerable venue served as a movie theater for a good 50 years, and it’s a real treat to be able to watch a film there once again. This Friday, April 15, for example, you can show up for a double feature of gut-busting Monty Python flicks. The KiMo’s Python-a-Thon gets underway at 8 p.m. with Monty Python and the Holy Grail . Following that, it’s Monty Python’s Life of Brian . Tickets are $15 in advance and are available at the KiMo box office or through Ticketmaster.
