The US-Mexico Border: Place, Imagination and Possibility is an exhibition and a schedule of citywide public programs organized by 516 ARTS. This Thursday, Feb. 22, one of those ongoing public programs is the Femme Frontera: Short Films Showcase at Guild Cinema (3405 Central Ave. NE). Starting at 7pm Angie Reza Tures and other guest filmmakers introduce this film screening on the subject of how female filmmakers are interacting with issues connected to the US-Mexico border. Femme Frontera is a collective of six women filmmakers from the US-Mexico border dedicated to inspiring and empowering female filmmakers from both sides of the border. Tickets are $8 general admission or $5 for students and seniors.

That screening event is followed up on Saturday, Feb. 24 with the workshop Smart Device Filmmaking with Femme Frontera at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street SW). Instead of simply watching movies, you can learn to make them—using only your smartphone or tablet. Members of Femme Frontera teach you the basics of visual storytelling, setting up a scene, taking advantage of available lighting and how shot framing can influence your story. This workshop runs from 10am to 2pm. Cost is $20 or $15 for members. To

Reel World: Re-Remember Re-Remember

The locally made, locally themed documentary Nasario Remembers the Río Puerco returns this Thursday, Feb. 22, with a screening at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street SW). Shebana Coelho’s film follows celebrated folklorist Nasario Garcia as he wanders through landscape and memory amid the ghost towns of New Mexico’s Río Puerco Valley, reviving recuerdos (memories) of his youth when the ranching villages thrived and viejitos (elders) told stories beside a river that once ran. Interviews, archival photos, oral histories and footage of the current-day landscape form the backbone of this doleful look back. This is a free ticketed event. Tickets can be picked up at the NHCC’s Bank of America Theatre one hour before showtime (7pm).

Reel World: Extra! Extra! Extra! Extra!

The New Mexico Film Office’s free educational speaker series returns Wednesday, Feb. 28 to the Joseph Montoya Building (1100 South St. Francis Dr.) in Santa Fe. Bobbie Shelton, a longtime background actor/extra in New Mexico, covers the topic of “Breaking into Background Work.” Ever wanted to wander around in costume in the background of motion pictures? Shelton explains who the background agencies in New Mexico are, how to register with them and what you need to know to start working as a background artist. Also on the schedule: what you need to bring to set, what your day will look like and some basic do’s and don’ts of working on a film set. The event takes place from 6 to 7pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
