New Mexico Women in Film is ready to host its annual Film Fiesta—only this year it’s a “quad-city” event taking place across the state. On Thursday, April 20, it will take place at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. On Friday, April 21, it will hit the South Broadway Cultural Center in Albuquerque. Saturday, April 22, the Fiesta rolls in to New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. It all wraps up on Sunday, April 23, at Santa Fe University of Art and Design in Santa Fe. The goal of the annual Film Fiesta is to showcase the creativity, vision and artistry of NMWIF members and to network emerging film students at the institutions of higher learning throughout New Mexico. Thirteen of the best narrative, documentary and experimental shorts by NMWIF members and various film students around the state have been chosen to be part of this round-the-state tour. At each stop films will screen from 5 to 9pm with an intermission from 6:30 to 7:30pm. All Access Tickets for each location are $15. Students at NMHU, NMSU and SFUAD can attend for free with student ID. Seating is limited, so organizers encourage you to purchase your tickets in advance. Reel World: Cowboy Up Cowboy Up
As part of its ongoing Hollywood Southwest: New Mexico in Film and Television exhibit, the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History (2000 Mountain NW) is hosting a special Third Thursday event on April 20. From 5 to 8:30pm, the museum will “explore the myth and enduring legacy of the Western in New Mexico” with live music and performances, hands-on activities for kids and adults, and food and “adult drink” specials in the cafe. It’s also a fine time to peruse the Hollywood Southwest exhibit—which has a particular emphasis on Western movies about or shot in New Mexico. Admission is free.
Reel World: Movies At The Mansion Movies At The Mansion
The Governor’s Mansion Foundation and the New Mexico Film Foundation are sponsoring an evening of stage readings from New Mexico’s finest young screenwriters on Friday, April 21, from 5:30 to 9pm. Shooting Stars will take place at the Governor’s Mansion in Santa Fe (1 Mansion Drive). Three finalists from the New Mexico Film Foundation’s Scholastic Script Contest and the winner from the New Mexico Girls Make Movies Grant will be on hand to have their short scripts read by local actors. Judges include professional screenwriters, news media and local celebrities. They will be selecting the winners of $1,500 in cash prizes. The Scholastic Script Contest is open to New Mexico high school and college students. The Girls Make Movies grant is open to New Mexico girls age 12 to 25. In addition to the live script readings, there will be a red carpet, screenings of short films, popcorn, libations and “local stars.” Tickets to this event are $45 general admission or $75 VIP.
