The New Mexico Film Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to helping local filmmakers create, finish and distribute their work—has a number of grant programs designed to assist the local indie industry. The Beau McNicholas Post-Production Grant is for the amount of $2000 and will go to a deserving filmmaker to help pay for post-production costs. Those costs can include sound, editing, color correction, music, special effects, etc. You must be a New Mexico resident to apply. Submissions must include a one-page letter describing your film and why you think you deserve the grant. The grant will be awarded in early January to one filmmaker whose work will be “a force for positive change.” Deadline to submit to the Beau McNicholas Grant is Thursday, Nov. 30. Reel World: On Spec On Spec
The Tale Writers Screenwriting Program is on a mission to “Elevate the quality and marketability of both the writer and the writing” for New Mexicans. To those ends, the organization—in partnership with New Mexico Women in Film—has been hosting a series of staged readings. Organized by professional directors and featuring professional local actors, these readings allow writers to see and hear what their finished screenplays will be like. Tale Writers is currently taking submission for “spec scripts.” You are tasked with writing a 1/2 hour or hour episode for one of 17 popular television shows. The winning scripts, chosen by a panel of judges, will be performed live on stage. To submit your work or to look at a list of eligible shows, go to talewriters.org/stage-readings. Reel World: Snow Screen Snow Screen
Ski film guru Warren Miller’s latest outdoor opus, Line of Descent, comes to the KiMo Theatre on Friday, Dec. 1. Doors open at 6:30, film starts at 7pm. This is Miller’s 68th annual documentary feature and will, as always, spotlight tons of gorgeous photographed skiing, snowboarding and other high-altitude sports activities. Tickets are $15 in advance through kimotickets.com or $17 for walkups.
Reel World: Whale, Why Not? Whale, Why Not?
The 3D nature documentary Humpback Whales arrives at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science’s giant-screen DynaTheater this Friday, Dec. 1. Narrated by Ewan McGregor, the film captures stunning underwater footage of these 50-ton aquatic mammals and their deep ocean habitat. The film will play through the early part of next year. The Santa Fe Business Incubator—a not-for-profit economic development organization—will present a free lecture/workshop on The Secret Art of Foley for Film and Television with Lara Dale on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The New Mexico-born Dale is a professional Foley artist making background sound effects for films (The Expendables, Conan the Barbarian) and television (“Single Ladies,” “Mildred Pierce”). Her event will take place from noon to 8pm at Santa Fe Business Incubator (3900 Paseo Del Sol in Santa Fe).
