On Thursday, July 11, at 5 p.m. French Funerals-Cremations & Rio Rancho Event Center (1950 Pine Road NE) will host its first public movie night. A free screening of the 2010 dramedy Get Low will be followed by a post-film discussion of issues raised by the movie led by Gail Rubin, award-winning speaker and author of A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die. Get Low is based on the true story of Felix “Bush” Breazeale who made history as the first person to hold his own funeral while still alive. The film stars Robert Duvall, Bill Murray and Sissy Spacek. Popcorn and refreshments will be served. The historic KiMo Theatre in downtown Albuquerque continues to present audiences with classic films from Hollywood and beyond. This week’s packed offerings include Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 French New Wave hallmark Breathless (Thursday, July 11, 7 p.m.), Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 gothic romance Rebecca (Friday, July 12, 8 p.m.), Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 Cold War mockery Dr. Strangelove (Saturday, July 13, 7 p.m.) and the 1961 musical favorite West Side Story (Sunday, July 14, 2 p.m.). The Santa Fe Independent Film Festival is helping bring HBO’s newest feature documentary to the Lensic Performing Arts Space. You can join producer Ilan Arboleda for the New Mexico premiere of Casting By on Wednesday, July 17, at 7 p.m. The film documents the unsung contributions of the humble casting director, iconoclasts whose “keen eye, exquisite taste and gut instincts” redefined Hollywood. Jeff Bridges, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, Clint Eastwood, Al Pacino, Robert Redford, Diane Lane and Woody Allen are just a few of the stars interviewed. Arboleda will take part in a post-film discussion about the crucial role of casting directors in the movie industry. The screening/discussion will take place at the Lensic (211 W. San Francisco). A VIP reception will immediately follow in the Lumpkins Ballroom at La Fonda Hotel.
