The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (2401 12th Street NW) will be screening writer Sherman Alexie and director Chris Eyre’s groundbreaking 1998 comedy-drama Smoke Signals. The film—starring Adam Beach, Evan Adams, Irene Bedard and Gary Farmer—concerns a nerdy young Native American living on a reservation in Idaho who talks his best friend into going on a quest to reclaim the mortal remains of the man who raised them both. The film won numerous awards and was named one of Alibi’s Top 10 Films of 1998. The film will begin showing at 6:30pm in the courtyard of the IPCC. There will be fresh popcorn, hot frybread and even a lookalike contest for the film’s main characters, Thomas and Victor. A $10 suggested donation gets you in the door. All proceeds will go to benefit the IPCC’s 4th Annual Pueblo Film Festival.

Movies on the Plaza returns to Albuquerque’s Civic Plaza with a Hollywood classic. On Friday, Aug. 18, there will be a screening of 1952’s Singin’ in the Rain. Arguably the greatest musical Hollywood ever produced, the film stars Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. Amid the boisterous song-and-dance numbers, a silent film production company tries to make the rocky transition to sound. Admission is, of course, free. Some seating is available, but moviegoers are welcome to bring portable seats, blankets and lawn chairs. The film will start at dusk (around 8:15pm). Show up earlier in the evening (starting at 6pm) to purchase food from the Pueblo Harvest Cafe and listen to music by the Silver String Band. Ironically, the screening is subject to cancellation due to inclement weather.
Reel World: Best Of 48 Best Of 48
This year’s 48 Hour Film Project wraps up on Friday, Aug. 18, with “The Best of 2017 48 Hour Film Project” at the KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW). Starting at 7pm, you can catch the top 7-minute films that were written, directed, shot and edited by a cadre of local filmmaking teams over the course of a single weekend earlier this month. The awards ceremony will follow the screening. Tickets are $11 general admission and $10 students/seniors. You can pick them up in advance by going to kimotickets.com. Doors open at 6:30pm. Reel World: Get Judgd Get Judgd
The ultra-low-budget horror-thriller Judgment will be shooting in Albuquerque Oct. 17 through Nov. 3. Producers are currently looking for crewmembers, including 2nd assistant director, various production assistants, key grip, boom operator, prop master, set costumer, beauty makeup assistant and SPFX makeup assistant.
