Duke City Roller Derby and New Mexico Entertainment Magazine are joining forces for a special screening of the 2009 sporting dramedy Whip It this Saturday, Sept. 7 at Guild Cinema (3405 Central Ave. NE). Ellen Page, Alia Shawkat, Marcia Gay Harden, Juliette Lewis, Kristen Wiig and Drew Barrymore (who directs) star in this tale of 17-year-old Austin gal who finds her purpose in a rough-and-tumble women’s roller derby league—even though mom wants her to be a beauty pageant queen. This screening is a fundraiser for Duke City Roller Derby, and tons of players from the local teams will be on hand (and maybe even in skates). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at holdmyticket.com. Doors open at 10:15pm. Film starts at 10:30pm. For more info go to facebook.com/events/392942134755975.

The New Mexico Film Office hosts a Breakdown Services training seminar on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Albuquerque Main Library (501 Copper Ave. NW). Breakdown Services is a family of companies (including Actors Access, CastingAbout, The Creative Index, Talent Link and others) that has been around since 1971. It not only educates and encourages actors and filmmakers, it also provides services that make the casting process easier for casting directors, talent representatives and actors. From 10:30am to noon, Breakdown Services’ Director of East Coast Operations Thom Goff and Director of Regional Services Jason Teresi will answer questions from actors. Wondering how your Actors Access profile looks to a casting director or how headshots, résumés and media profiles can make their strongest impressions on filmmakers? Here’s your chance to find out. From 1:30pm to 3pm, Goff and Teresi offer a similar seminar aimed at filmmakers and content creators. Find out what free, industrywide tools Breakdown Services offers to those on the hunt for actors. Admission to either of these seminars is free, but seating is limited. You need to register beforehand by going to eventbrite.com.
