The KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW) continues its Great Westerns series with the 1969 classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman. The Oscar-winning film follows the exploits of two Wild West train robbers who flee to Bolivia after life gets too hot back home. You can catch it Wednesday, Aug. 26, starting at 7 pm. Reel World: Havana Twist Havana Twist
The National Hispanic Cultural Center wraps up its tribute to Cuban cinema with a screening on Thursday, Aug. 20, of Ian Padrón’s drama Habanastation. The film was shot in an actual slum in western Havana and addresses the inequalities in Cuban society as seen through the eyes of two children of different social strata. It was submitted as the Cuban entry for 2012’s Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards. The screening—in Spanish with English subtitles—starts at 7pm. Tickets are free and available at the Bank of America Theatre box office (1701 Fourth Street SW) an hour before showtime.
Reel World: Mentor Time Mentor Time
On Saturday, Aug. 29, New Mexico Women in Film will present an afternoon of Mentor Mania! Described as “speed-dating style mentoring,” the event will feature brief but informative one-on-one time with some of New Mexico’s top women in the film and television industry, plus “brisk and lively roundtable discussions on a variety of pertinent subjects and issues.” Participants are encouraged to bring one-minute intro/description/career questions for the mentors. Mentors on hand will include Talkia Kosh (president of NM Lawyers for the Arts), Amy Lanasa (department head for Creative Media Institute for Film & Digital Arts at NMSU), Trish Lopez, (film industry consultant at the NM Film Office), Carissa Mitchell (casting agent at Mitchell & Presley Talent Group), Liesette Paisner (director of the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival) and Puck Stair (location scout for film and television productions and executive board member of IATSE 480). NMWIF members must make a reservation (at nmwifinfo@gmail.com) and guests must purchase an online ticket ($20 at nmwif.com) by Friday, Aug. 28. There are only 40 slots available, so act quickly. Reel World: Monster Invasion Monster Invasion
Albuquerque’s annual science-fiction convention Bubonicon returns Aug. 28 through 30 for its 47th annual outing. This Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22 and 23, Bubonicon will be hosting a special pre-con warm-up event at Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE). Starting at noon it’s a classic “invasion” double-feature. First up is Howard Hawks’ 1951 monster movie fave The Thing From Another World. At 2pm it’s 1958’s The Blob. A mere $7 gets you in for both films.
