The historic KiMo Theatre in Downtown Albuquerque is going back to its roots (in a high-tech way) by showing movies again. The city venue has partnered up with Emerging Pictures, a network of high-definition digital download projection systems linking theaters across the country. KiMo will kick off this new partnership on Saturday, June 19, with London Calling: Live in Hyde Park , a live concert performance featuring Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The concert is just the first in a series of upcoming performances of live simulcasts and HD screenings. Emerging Pictures’ new digital projection system will allow the KiMo to present opera, ballet, concerts and film festival selections. Yes, they will be showing the occasional classic or independent art film as well. I have it on good authority, for example, that the KiMo staff hopes to assemble an Alfred Hitchcock retrospective for Halloween week. Tickets for this Saturday’s screening of London Calling: Live in Hyde Park are $15 a person and available through the KiMo box office or ticketmaster.com. The screening starts at 8 p.m. with an opening reception at 7 p.m.

Louie’s Rock-N-Reels, Albuquerque’s premier poster and movie memorabilia shop, is celebrating the sixth anniversary of its current location (105 Harvard SE). But you get the presents! Stop by the shop to register for two big drawings. On Wednesday, June 23, Louie will pull a winner for two tickets to the upcoming Cheech & Chong concert at Sandia Resort & Casino on Saturday, June 26. The following week, in honor of Michael Jackson’s birthday, Louie will be selecting the winner of a rare Michael Jackson’s This Is It theatrical standee. That drawing will take place on Wednesday, June 30. Swing by anytime between now and the drawings to register.
Reel World: En Garde For Avant-Garde En Garde For Avant-Garde
On Monday, June 21, Theater Grottesco and SITE Santa Fe will present An Evening With Robert Breer. Breer, in case you didn’t know—and I’ll be honest, I sure didn’t—has been described by the Harvard Film Archive as “a founding member of the American avant-garde.” The filmmaker-painter-animator has selected eight of the more than 40 abstract, multimedia collage films he has created during the past 50-odd years to screen at this special event. The short films will be presented alongside an onstage interview conducted by local scholar Gene Youngblood, author of Expanded Cinema. A reception will follow. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit Santa Fe’s Theater Grottesco. The event will take place at the CCA Cinematheque (1050 Old Pecos Trail) beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 general, $6 students.
