This August the KiMo Theatre is presenting its Summer Retrospective of Mexican Cinema. In conjunction with the Consulate of Mexico, KiMo will screen five classic Mexican films. The series starts on Thursday, Aug. 1, with 1943’s Flor Silvestre (Wildflower) starring Dolores del Río and Pedro Armendáriz. The film is a melodramatic look at the Mexican Revolution and was del Río’s first Spanish language film following her career in Hollywood’s Golden Age. On Thursday, Aug. 8, it’s 1951’s La Hija del Engaño (The Daughter of Deceit) directed by Luis Buñuel. That’s followed on Thursday, Aug. 15, with 1953’s La Ilusion Viaje en Tranvía (Illusion Travels by Streetcar)—which is also directed by Buñuel. The first film is a noirish melodrama about a salesman who leaves his family and becomes a gangster. The second is a comedy about two drunk transit workers who take a decommissioned streetcar out for one last ride. Pedro Páramo (1967) returns to the Mexican Revolution for a more allegorical look back. It screens on Thursday, Aug. 22. The series closes out on Thursday, Aug. 29, with 1983’s Frida Naturaleza Viva (Frida Still Life), a biographical drama about painter Frida Kahlo starring Ofelia Medina. All films start at 7 p.m. and are presented in Spanish with English subtitles. Tickets are $5 general admission for all seats.
Reel World: Return Of Sharknado Return Of Sharknado
If you were one of the sad individuals who did not catch the premiere of the Syfy Channel meme-in-the-making Sharknado the other week—either through inattention or a lack of basic cable—you’re in luck! Syfy is actually releasing the so-awful-it’s-awesome pic to 200 Regal theaters across the U.S. for a special one-off midnight showing. Producers are really hoping to turn it into a Rocky Horror Picture Show-style joke-along. Best of luck with that. The disasterrific film will hit Cottonwood 16 (10000 Coors NW) at 12:05 a.m. this Friday night. Tickets are $12.50 and are available through Fathomevents.com.
Reel World: Movie Under The Wings Movie Under The Wings
The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History (601 Eubank SE) is inviting audiences to a special Movie Under the Wings presentation outside in the museum’s Heritage Park. On Saturday, Aug. 3, the blockbuster superhero flick The Avengers will be screened amongst the museum’s collection of classic Cold War airplanes. It’s like watching a movie on the deck of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier! Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the movie begins at dark. Local food trucks will be available throughout the night. Portable chairs are welcome, but pets are not. This event is a fundraiser for Operation Preservation: The Campaign to Restore the Planes. The museum is hoping to raise $200,000 in two years to restore the B29 Superfortress, the B52-B Stratofortress, the F-105D Thunderchief and the A7 Corsair II—all of which reside in the museums permanent collection at Heritage Park.
