Multi-use art space, coffeehouse and general neighborhood hangout The Kosmos is getting into the movie biz. Kind of. This weekend, The Kosmos will host several screenings of Jamin Winans’ much-praised ultra-indie fantasy film Ink . Ink spins the story of an 8-year-old girl who becomes a pawn in a metaphysical war being fought between the forces of light and darkness. Kidnapped and taken to a freaky alternate dimension, our heroine must fight her way back to the real world and bring salvation to her desperate father. Screenings will take place Friday and Saturday, March 12 and 13, at 8 p.m. There will also be a Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. The Kosmos is located at 1713 Fifth Street NW. Reel World: Wonderland Meets Wonderbra Wonderland Meets Wonderbra
Given that Tim Burton’s 3-D take on Alice in Wonderland just crushed records to become a $116 million opening weekend smash, I’d say the timing is perfect for the locally produced comedic film Malice in Wonderland. Albuquerque’s queens of the drag world, The Dolls, first performed their stage-show takeoff on Alice back in 2008. Earlier this year, writer-performer Kenneth Ansloan (better known as Tequila Mockyngbyrd) and director Russell Maynor joined up with local actors AJ Carian, Dean Eldon Squibb, Jim Johns, Bradd Howard and more to bring the stage show to full, cinematic light. Amazingly, shooting has already wrapped, and the crew is working furiously through post-production. Reel World: Dying Time Dying Time
In other local film news, the New Mexico-lensed thriller A Lonely Place for Dying has locked down screenings at two more film festivals, including the Lake Country Film Festival in Illinois and the White Sands International Film Festival in Las Cruces. Producers recently inked a DVD distribution deal that covers six countries. Director and co-writer Justin Evans says the film is close to securing a domestic theatrical distribution deal and hopes to have it in a handful of U.S. theaters by this fall.
