Louie’s Rock-N-Reels, Albuquerque’s longtime purveyor of awesome movie memorabilia, suffered a break-in late last month. Owner Louie Torres says several of his most prized items disappeared during the burglary. This is lousy news and not just because it takes money from the pockets of a hardworking local businessman. It also deprives Albuquerque’s movie fans of the opportunity to purchase their own piece of movie history. The burglary happened sometime between 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, on Harvard across from UNM. Torres is offering a reward for the return of the items and would be grateful if Alibi readers could keep an eye out for them at flea markets, garage sales and other retail outlets. Topping the list is Torres’ own 14”-by-36” poster for Cheech and Chong’s Up in Smoke. This one’s autographed by Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong and personalized to Torres. Also missing are a 1977 Grateful Dead Illinois concert poster, a 40”-by-60” Heavy Metal movie poster, 25 oversized French and Italian posters for American films, a 12” Marilyn Monroe picture disc, 20 to 30 actor-autographed photos and several art prints, including one from Salvador Dali’s 1967 “Rebirth of Israel” series. Girl Tech 2012 is hosting a screening party on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at AirDance ArtSpace (3030 Isleta SW). The screening will showcase short videos created by young women of color in New Mexico. These films are intended to show young people’s perspectives on parenting and health care access in our state. This is a joint presentation of the Media Literacy Project and Young Women United. The screening is free, but you must RSVP to reserve a seat. If you’re looking for ways to get in the Halloween mood this weekend, one of your best bets is the KiMo Theatre’s special performance of the 1925 monster movie Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney. The rare, hand-tinted silent film will be accompanied by live music courtesy of the Cambridge, Mass., ensemble Alloy Orchestra.
