Huh. Apparently, Mark Wahlberg will spend September shooting not one, but two movies in our fair state. Aside from the based-on-a-comic-book cop drama 2 Guns (with Denzel Washington), Wahlberg will also star in the based-on-a-true-story war drama Lone Survivor . The second feature begins lensing in New Mexico toward the end of September, mere days after the first wraps. Lone Survivor is based on Marcus Luttrell’s best-selling nonfiction book about an ill-fated Navy Seal mission ambushed by Taliban forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Taylor Kitsch ( Savages ) and Ben Foster ( X-Men: The Last Stand ) will costar, and Peter Berg ( Battleship ) will direct. Producers and casting directors are going to hold a casting call on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel (4048 Cerrillos) in Santa Fe. At least 170 New Mexico crew members, 35 actors and 1,400 extras will be employed. Production is on the hunt for “Middle Eastern men, women and children, Hispanic men with beards and men of all races with recent military experience.” For more information, head over to Elizabeth Gabel Casting. Reel World: More Kimo Movies More Kimo Movies
The historic KiMo Theatre is increasing its movie footprint with a trio of great screenings this weekend. The curtain pulls back on Friday, Sept. 7, with the return of Friday Fright Nights. This spooky series concentrates on 1950s horror classics. The first film in the lineup will be the 1954 monster movie Creature From the Black Lagoon at 8 p.m. (Future Fright Night installments include It Came From Outer Space on Sept. 28.) On Saturday, Sept. 8, KiMo celebrates the start of the school year with John Hughes’ 1985 high school comedy The Breakfast Club at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the family-friendly matinee series kicks off with the 2006 cartoon Despicable Me at 2 p.m. (Future offerings include Happy Feet on Sept. 16.) Tickets are $7 general, $5 students and seniors, $3 children 12-and-under. Tickets are available at the KiMo box office (423 Central NW) and online.
