Reel New Mexico, Santa Fe’s only monthly independent film series, is back on Thursday, Oct. 11, with the premiere of Missing You. This romantic comedy about star-crossed lovers who can’t ever seem to cross paths is the work of actor-turned-filmmaker Phil Duran (star of Stiffed and The Righteous and the Wicked). It’s preceded by the post-apocalyptic coming-of-age short “Phoenix” by Sarah Northrop—who served as editor on Missing You. The program starts at 7 p.m. at the La Tienda at Eldorado (7 Caliente Road, Santa Fe). A contribution of $5 is suggested at the door.
Reel World: Get In Motion Get In Motion
Motion 2012 is a speakers conference inspired by the TED Talks. This one, however, focuses entirely on motion graphics, animation and VFX. If that’s totally up your alley, it’s happening on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 12-14) at KiMo Theatre. You can check out the list of film, television and video game industry speakers (including Patrick Hanenberger from DreamWorks Animation), workshops and other events online. Passes ($99 to $600) are available online. On Sunday, Oct. 14, the festival is sponsoring a free, open-to-the-public screening of the new documentary Beauty is Embarrassing. The film—part biography, part performance art—captures the career of Wayne White. He went from being an underground cartoonist to the lead designer and puppeteer on “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.” The film starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free, but you must reserve them in advance.
Reel World: Chaplin Happenin’ Chaplin Happenin’
The New Mexico Philharmonic will accompany a selection of Charlie Chaplin films on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. at the Kiva Auditorium. Conductor Grant Cooper will turn over his duties to physical comedian Dan Kamin, who trained Robert Downey Jr. for his role in the Oscar-nominated biopic Chaplin. Following that bit of comic mayhem, the Chaplin shorts “Easy Street” and “The Immigrant” will be shown with brand new, live symphonic scores courtesy of Maestro Cooper. The Santa Fe Independent Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday, Oct. 17. We’ll have more info in next week’s Alibi. But if you want to catch all the films, don’t miss the opening night shindig. Events include a selection of student films from the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, the premiere of Sun Kissed (a medical-thriller documentary filmed on the Navajo reservation in Gallup) and a Bless Me, Ultima-themed party at the Zia Diner.
