In honor of Día de los Muertos, the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street SW) will host a special screening of the lyrical documentary Calling Home the Dead/Llamar a los Muertos a Casa. Described as a visual tone poem, this film looks in on the villagers of Lake Pátzcuaro as they lovingly clean and adorn the graves of long-gone loved ones with beautiful ofrendas, blankets of marigolds and special foods. As Día de los Muertos approaches, rockets are launched into the heavens to awaken departed souls and call them home for a visit. This loving look into indigenous practices rarely seen outside Mexico is presented as part of the Bank of America Theatre Free Thursday Film Series. This is a free ticketed event and takes place Thursday, Nov. 3 starting at 7pm. Tickets are available at the venue starting one hour before showtime.
Reel World: Show And Tell Show And Tell
The 2017 New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase Awards Ceremony and Screening will take place this Friday and Saturday at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street SW). The annual event, sponsored by the New Mexico Film Office, spotlights and celebrates a wide range of creative talent from around our state. Short films in a variety of categories were submitted by dozens of up-and-coming New Mexico filmmakers. The award ceremony itself will take place on Friday, Nov. 4, from 6:30 to 8pm and will include a panel discussion with the Showcase winners. On Saturday, Nov. 5, the top films from each category (Comedy, Documentary, Drama, Horror, Music Video, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Student) will be screened from 1pm to 4pm. This two-day event will take place inside the Bank of America Theatre. No RSVP is necessary. Seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Reel World: Cyber-Cinema Cyber-Cinema
Motivated by his love for ’80s-style sci-fi, local filmmaker Tim McClelland (Fugue State) has organized a retro-tastic “cyberpunk” film festival right here in Albuquerque. The Neon Dystopia Micro Festival will feature an eye-popping selection of music videos, video games, short films and animation from around the world. Spotlighted in this year’s lineup are “Genesis” from Spain, “Zauvek” from Serbia, “Narita Boy” from Spain, “Hardwired” from Poland and “Crimewave” from Ireland. The intriguingly titled “Attack of the Cyber Octopuses” from Estonia will be having its North American premiere. To top it off, two shot-in-Albuquerque shorts, “Soft War” and “Night Vision,” will have their world premieres. Neon Dystopia Micro Festival will take place Saturday, Nov. 4 starting at 10:30pm at Guild Cinema (3405 Central Ave. NE). Longstanding Albuquerque “micro-cine” organization Basement Films returns to the University of New Mexico’s Southwest Film Center with its 13th annual Audio/Visual Show. Every year, this unique variety show invites musicians and video/filmmakers to collaborate in a live, multimedia environment. Among this year’s performers are Pits + Tom Foe, River + Charlie Quane, Bryan Konefsky, Glitter Vomit + Beth Hansen, Peter Lisignoli + Kristen Loree, Chris Roberts + Jenette Isaacson and SOMNO PROFUNDANTE.
