Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation Department’s Movies in the Park series returns this Friday, June 6, with the animated comedy Despicable Me 2. The event will take place at Los Vecinos Community Center (478 1/2 Old Hwy. 66 in Tijeras). The film will start sometime after 7pm, around dusk. Guests are welcome to bring coolers with food and drink, blankets and lawn chairs. Alcohol and glass containers are prohibited. The family fun continues the very next night—Saturday, June 7—with another animated flick. The squirrel-based heist toon The Nut Job will screen outdoors at the Altamont Little League park (8300 Eubank NE) starting at dusk. Cold in July
Famed horror and crime fiction writer Joe R. Lansdale will be at Santa Fe’s Jean Cocteau Cinema (418 Montezuma Ave.) this Saturday, June 7, to introduce his new film Cold in July. The dark thriller stars Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard and Don Johnson and is directed by Jim Mickle (We Are What We Are, Stake Land). Mickle will also be on hand to introduce the event and participate in a post-film Q&A/book signing with Lansdale. The film screens at 2 and 8pm. At 11pm that night, there will be a special screening of Lansdale’s 2002 horror comedy Bubba Ho-Tep (in which an aged Elvis and a crazy JFK battle an ancient mummy in an East Texas retirement home). Lansdale will hang around until then to judge a special Elvis costume contest. As if that weren’t enough, Lansdale’s daughter, up-and-coming country artist Kasey Lansdale, will perform songs from Cold in July’s soundtrack at the theater on Monday, June 9, starting at 7pm. If you’re a big Lansdale fan and can’t make it up to Santa Fe this weekend, hold tight. Lansdale is sticking around the Land of Enchantment and will visit Albuquerque’s Guild Cinema on Friday, June 13, to do it all over again.
Reel World: Educational Film Educational Film
Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice will present the documentary Girl Rising on Tuesday, June 10. Girl Rising is described as “an inspirational film about girls’ educational barriers and triumphs, and why girls’ education is important today in the developing world.” The recent kidnapping of over 300 Nigerian schoolgirls has certainly brought this idea to the forefront of people’s minds. This screening is free and open to the public and starts at 6:30pm. Center for Peace and Justice is located at 202 Harvard SE.
