The 4 th Annual Italian Film Festival opens in Albuquerque this Sunday, Feb. 14. The festival will launch in grand style with an all-day, five-event afternoon of food, wine and film. Starting at noon at the South Broadway Cultural Center is the opening reception, featuring antipasto prepared by Tully’s Market, mimosas by Southern Wine & Spirits and coffee by Ecco Espresso and Gelato. At 1 p.m., it’s a special presentation of “ultimate Italian Opera” Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma on the big screen. At 2:30 p.m., there will be an intermezzo dinner catered by Scalo Northern Italian Grill, Bravo! Cucina Italiano and Mimi’s Kitchen. At 3:30, it’s Act II of Norma . The day closes out at 4:50 p.m. with a dulce course featuring gelato and coffee. This massive opening-day event will set you back 50 bucks. For the next seven days, a selection of classic and modern Italian films will unspool at several theaters around town (Guild Cinema, Lobo Theater, South Broadway Cultural Center). Among the films are the rough gangster drama Gommorah , the adventurous Fellini flick The White Sheik and the Italian babe-filled anthology Boccaccio ’70 . Individual film tickets will set you back $8 and can be purchased online or at Ecco Espresso and Gelato (3409 Central NE). The 48 Hour Film Festival is compiling some of its finest submissions for a “Best of the Best 48 Hour Films” screening. This collection of short films from around the globe were all shot in just two days as part of the annual 48 Hour Film Festival. The free screening will take place at Re-Source, a new venue located at 100 Gold SE (next door to the Box Theater), on Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. It follows the monthly indieQ meeting, a get-together of Albuquerque independent filmmakers, which takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, log on to 48hourfilm.com/albuquerque.
