A group of students from Albuquerque’s Public Academy for Performing Arts just got back from Los Angeles where their short dance film “Re-Step” was screened at the 12th Annual Dance Camera West. The international “dance media film festival” named “Re-Step” this year’s Pro Motion Youth Winner. In addition to this most recent accolade, the film won first place locally at the sixth annual Future Voices of New Mexico Film and Photography Festival presented by National Geographic’s All Roads Film Project and the Lensic Performing Arts Center. Director Niall Rawn took home a check for $300. All tolled, PAPA won awards in six categories at the April festival for both film and photography. So congratulations are in order all around. If you’re interested in checking out what PAPA has been doing, several works by advanced PAPA film students will be screened alongside professional filmmakers at the N4th theater’s Wild Dancing West celebration this Friday night. Reel World: Native Experience In Cinema Native Experience In Cinema
The New Mexico Filmmakers Experience returns to the CCA Cinematheque on Sunday, May 19. This month’s topic is Native American New Mexico Filmmakers. Tohatchi filmmaker Ramona Emerson will moderate the panel discussion. Filmmakers, actors and artists Jason Asenap, Socorro Gonzales, Melissa Henry and Pierre Barrera will be on hand to discuss their unique experiences. As always film clips and shorts will accompany the discussion. The event is free and open to the public. It will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Santa Fe’s Center for Contemporary Arts is located at 1050 Old Pecos Trail.
Reel World: Are You Magnificent? Are You Magnificent?
¡Cine Magnífico!, Albuquerque’s newest Latino film festival, is getting ready to launch May 30 through June 2. The festival is a collaboration between the Instituto Cervantes, UNM’s Latin American and Iberian Institute and the National Hispanic Cultural Center. It will feature contemporary documentaries, short films and features from Spain, Portugal and Latin America as well as Latinos in the United States. Organizers are currently looking for volunteers to help out with the four-day event. Reel World: Museums, Movies And Monsters Museums, Movies And Monsters
Every third Thursday of the month, the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History offers free admission from 5 to 8:30 p.m. This Thursday, May 16, the Museum is having a special “Movie Night at the Museum.” Ann Lerner, film liaison for the City of Albuquerque, will be on hand to discuss what is happening in New Mexico’s film industry. To get you in the proper drive-in movie mood, local musician Freddie Chavez will play oldies from the ’50s and ’60s in the Museum’s amphitheater. Topping off the festivities, there will be a free screening of the classic 1958 monster movie Earth vs. the Spider—which was partially shot right here in New Mexico. Comedienne Jessica Osbourne, film blogger Daniel Boyer and Bubonicon honcho Craig Chrissinger will be there providing a “Mystery Science Theater 300”-style couch commentary for the film.
