The New Mexico Humanities Council has joined up with the historic KiMo Theatre to present a film and discussion series titled “Fake News: Journalism Goes to Hollywood.” The series is hosted by Alibi Film Editor Devin D. O’Leary. (Yup, that’s me!) Once a month I’ll be at the KiMo leading a guest reporter or scholar through a discussion of the topics that each film raises. The hope is to examine the evolving role of the press in democratic societies—as viewed through the lens of Hollywood. Audiences are invited to ask questions and engage in conversation with the guests. The series starts this Sunday, May 20, at 6pm with a screening of the 2017 Academy Award-nominated film The Post. The film looks at female newspaper publisher Key Graham (Meryl Streep) and hard-driving editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks), who pushed to publish the Pentagon Papers, classified documents that revealed the US government’s 30-year involvement in the Vietnam War. Following the film there will be a discussion with special guests Scott Armstrong, an investigative journalist and former Washington Post reporter, and Megan Kamerick, freelance journalist and host of “Morning Edition” at KUNM. Admission to these screenings is free to the public, thanks to a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and its generous support of the Democracy and the Informed Citizen Initiative. The “Fake News” screenings will take place, once a month, through November. Future film screenings include Ace in the Hole (June), Almost Famous (July), Spotlight (August), Salvador (September), Shattered Glass (October) and All the President’s Men (November). New Mexico Women in Film in partnership with UNM Continuing Education Digital Arts presents “The Power Of Story.” On Sunday, May 20 from 3 to 6pm at the Continuing Education Theater Auditorium (1634 University Blvd. NE), UNM’s Digital Arts department—a multidisciplinary program illustrating the power of story—gets saluted with a festive selection of music, dance, storytellers and films. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for NMWIF members or local film union members (IATSE, SAG, DGA). General public is $15.
Reel World: Service Screening Service Screening
The Patrick J. Baca Library at Central and Unser (8081 Central Ave. NW) presents Adult Movie Night on Monday, May 21. Starting at 5:30pm, the library is screening the 2017 film Thank You For Your Service. Staring Miles Teller (Whiplash, Divergent) this post-war drama centers on a group of US soldiers returning from Iraq as they struggle to integrate back into family and civilian life. Admission is free. Seating is limited. The film is R-rated, and the screening is open to adults 17 and over. Photo IDs will be checked at the door.
