Aaron Hendren, the Albuquerque-based writer-director of The Faithful and the Foul and Flicker, is premiering his newest film, Psycho Bettys From Planet Pussycat, this Friday and Saturday at Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. The comic rock and roll musical traces the journey of a quartet of silver-miniskirted alien babes from a male-deprived civilization who come to Earth in search of mates. The film stars local talent Katy Houska, Hannah Kaufman, Lauren Poole and Rachel Shapiro. Cast and crew will, of course, be on hand for the big event. Reel World: Cuban Food For Thought Cuban Food For Thought
This Wednesday, Sept. 21, Guild Cinema will present a special, one-night-only screening of the U.S./Cuban relations documentary Will The Real Terrorist Please Stand Up. Nelson Valdes, professor emeritus of sociology at UNM and founder of the Latin America Data Base in the Latin American and Iberian Institute, will be a guest speaker at the 6 and 8 p.m. screenings. Valdes is a longtime expert on Cuban and U.S. relations. He will field questions after the film and will lead a discussion on the still-contentious topic with audience members.
Reel World: Meet Some Friends Meet Some Friends
This Sunday, Sept. 18, Friends of Film, Video, Arts will host its monthly meet-and-greet. Sheryl Brown, from Real to Reel Productions, will be there for September’s special lecture program “Wanna Make a Million Dollars?” Brown will share information on film competitions around the world that you can easily enter and “hopefully” make some money off of. Additional guest filmmakers who have entered competitions will be around to share their tips as well. Social time and work-in-progress screenings are also included. The meeting is free to FoFVA members or $10 at the door for nonmembers. The whole affair will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the Harwood Basement Theater (1114 Seventh Street NW).
Reel World: “Dojo” Got Mojo “Dojo” Got Mojo
Award-winning Santa Fe-based filmmaker Matthew Page (“Fool’s Gold,” “Delivery Date,” “Hunter’s Moon”) is already three episodes deep into his mockumentary web series “Enter the Dojo.” The series documents the efforts of cocky martial arts instructor Master Ken (Page) to teach his students the deadly street fighting art of “Ameri-Do-Te.” Ken’s macho posturing and clueless philosophy form the backbone of this slick, laugh-filled parody of overly commercial, strip-mall martial arts instruction. (The title of Episode 2? “Destroy the Groin.”) The first episode has already landed more than 40,000 views on YouTube. You can also check it out at WebSeriesNetwork.com and FunnyOrDie.com.
