The seven-film retrospective tribute to Akira Kurosawa comes to an end this Thursday night at KiMo Theatre with the master’s final period drama, 1985’s Ran . The film is an epic, majestic retelling of Shakespeare’s King Lear saga set in feudal Japan. It certainly demands to be seen on the big screen and is a great film to close out the series on. The screening will take place on Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 to $7.

The New Mexico Centennial Film Series continues at KiMo on Wednesday, Aug. 15, with The Man Who Fell to Earth. This trippy, 1976 sci-fi cult film is directed by Australian Nicolas Roeg and stars David Bowie as a confused alien visitor who comes to our planet only to be seduced by our materialistic culture. The film was shot in Albuquerque, White Sands National Monument, Fenton Lake and Madrid. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Film starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Reel World: Free Movies? Free Movies?

One of the most frequent questions I get as film editor of the Alibi is, “How do I get into free movies like you?” Well, you could cut my head off and absorb my life force like in Highlander . Personally, however, I’d prefer it if you’d just head over to gofobo.com or the 43KIXAlbuquerque page on Facebook and Twitter.

Gofobo gives consumers a way to search for advance movie screenings in their area and then download free passes. A lot of the studios are using it now instead of physical passes, like the kind the
Alibi sometimes hands out. You need to log in with an account to get info on screenings, but it’s an easy enough process.

43KIXAlbuquerque still seems to be ramping up, but it’s got potential. The site posts codes for upcoming preview screenings, gives away movie prize packs, text alerts you about movie times and doles out bits of entertainment news.

So there you go—haunt those two webby resources, and you’ll be hip to the sort of free preview screenings I hang out at. You can thank me with candy.
