Santa Fe-based ambient music composer Michael Stearns will be on hand to introduce screenings of the film Samsara on Friday, Oct. 19, at Albuquerque’s Guild Cinema. The film is a major collaboration between Stearns and director Ron Fricke. They also worked together on the 1992 documentary Baraka. Functioning as a spiritual successor to that film, Samsara is a wordless, non-narrative travelogue shot over a period of five years in 25 countries. It’s soundtrack features a mesmerizing, nonstop array of ethnic, sacred and ambient music. Stearns will do a Q&A between the 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. shows.
Congratulations are in order. Local producer Anthony DellaFlora and videographers Blaise Koller and Charles McClain have been awarded a Rocky Mountain Emmy for their work on “Flight Path: The Flyway Project.” The short film is a documentary chronicling the process behind one of Albuquerque’s public artworks—and installation by Corrales artist Robert Wilson. Since 2010, DellaFlora, Koller and McClain have produced eight documentaries and 13 interview shows for the City of Albuquerque’s Public Art Urban Enhancement Program, which airs on GOV-TV (Comcast channel 16). If you’re interested, “Flight Path” can be viewed on the Albuquerque Public Art Vimeo site.
Flipping through the schedule, you can tell the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival has grown by leaps and bounds this year. Oct. 17 through 21 is jam-packed with workshops, lectures, parties, award ceremonies and—of course—plenty of movie screenings. Things get going full-tilt with a sold-out premiere of Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me, Ultima. Luckily, there are plenty more movies you can get into over the course of the weekend—including documentaries, features and shorts. Screenings take place at Warehouse 21 or The Lensic. The festival will close out on Sunday with the New Mexico premiere of best-selling author Judy Blume’s Tiger Eyes. The film was directed by her son Lawrence Bloom and shot right here in the Land of Enchantment. Bloom will be at the screening and will also participate in a screenwriting panel on Saturday, Oct. 20. Go to festival’s web site for a complete list of events, times and ticket prices.
