Movies on the Plaza continues this Friday, Aug. 23 with Disney’s animated hit The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The 1996 film was nominated for a Best Music Oscar and features considerably more songs than Victor Hugo’s original 1831 novel. Admission is free and open to the public. Seating is available in Civic Plaza, but you are welcome to bring your own chairs or picnic blankets. A concession stand will be available onsite. Dogs and bicycles are welcome. Feel free to show up early and play in Civic Plaza’s new splash pad. The film begins at dusk (around 8pm).
Reel World: Soup To Nuts Soup To Nuts
The “dinner and a movie” concept comes to Santa Fe’s Jean Cocteau Cinema (418 Montezuma Ave.) on Saturday, Aug. 24. The theater is screening the Southwestern favorite Tortilla Soup and has recruited a couple local chefs to come up with something more than popcorn and sodas to accompany it. The 2001 comedy-drama tells the story of three grown sisters trying to live at home with their father (Héctor Elizondo), an exacting Latino chef who is slowly losing his sense of taste. The film is a loose remake of Ang Lee’s 1994 classic Eat Drink Man Woman. Chef Andrea Abedi and Chef Honey J. Yohalem host this special screening and have paired it with a menu of incredible food items that reflect the film’s particular culinary taste. Tickets are $40 each (including a meat or vegetarian option) and must be purchased in advance by going to jeancocteaucinema.com. Dinner runs from 6:15 to 7pm. The film starts at 7pm.
Reel World: Movie + Meal Movie + Meal
O’Neill’s Pub in Nob Hill (4310 Central Ave. SE) is also getting in on the “dinner and a movie” thing. Guests are invited to show up on Wednesday, Aug. 28 for a free screening of a classic movie inside the restaurant/bar’s cozy event space. Though they can’t announce the name of the film, organizers assure us that it is a “classic, family-friendly movie.” Admission is free. Doors open at 6:30pm. Film starts at 7pm. Reel World: Rah Rah Raul Rah Rah Raul
New Mexico PBS and the International Shakespeare Center present a free screening of the “American Masters” episode “Raúl Juliá: The World’s Stage” on Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 7 to 9pm at The Swan Theater (1213 Parkway Dr.) in Santa Fe. The documentary traces the career of the brilliant and charismatic actor, who journeyed from his native Puerto Rico to 1960s New York, eventually rising to prominence on Broadway and in Hollywood. Guests are invited to engage with local theater professionals in a conversation and a meet-and-greet at a dessert reception following the screening.
