Our neighbor to the north hopes to lure film lovers to the City Different for the 13th annual Santa Fe Film Festival. The viewing party unfolds Dec. 6 through 9 at a number of venues including The Screen, the Center for Contemporary Arts, The Lensic Performing Arts Center and the New Mexico History Museum. There will be kids’ films (Jean-Francois Laguionie’s animated fable Le Tableau), foreign dramas (Jacques Audiard’s dark, seaside romance Rust and Bone with Marion Cotillard), American indies (Hyde Park on the Hudson starring Bill Murray as FDR) and artsy documentaries (the ukulele-rockin’ Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings).The SFFF Kick-Off Party takes place Thursday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Cowgirl BBQ (319 S. Guadalupe). From there, attendees will be forced to choose from 37 features and a whole mess of shorts unspooling on the festival’s various screens. Among the highlights is a local premiere of Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouak’s generation-defining novel On The Road featuring Kristen Stewart, Steve Buscemi, Viggo Mortensen, Garrett Hedlund and Amy Adams (Saturday, 7 p.m., at The Screen). Also rising to the top of the must-see list is actor Dustin Hoffman’s directing debut, Quartet—a charming comedy-drama about a famed opera group (Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay and Maggie Smith among them) reunited in a British retirement home (Friday, 7 p.m., at The Lensic). Among the efforts hitting close to home is From Zimbabwe to Santa Fe, a documentary tracing the journey of three rural Zimbabwean women traveling to Santa Fe’s Folk Art Market to sell their wares (Friday, 2:15 p.m. at CCA). Director Cristina McCandless will be on hand to introduce From Zimbabwe to Santa Fe, one of several special panel discussions and Q&A sessions with filmmakers scattered throughout the festival.General admission for most screenings runs $15 or $10 with student ID. A 10-pack of tickets will set you back $125 (and save you 25 bucks in the process). A limited number of VIP, all-access passes are available for $525.
