The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science is offering a “sensory friendly” screening of the documentary film Superpower Dogs at the museum’s big-screen DynaTheater (1801 Mountain Rd. NW) on Thursday, Aug. 15 starting at 5:30pm. Among other inspirational animal tales, the film relates the story of Ricochet, a surf and therapy dog who helps people with special needs and veterans with PTSD. Superpower Dogs will be shown with the theater lights only dimmed and the sound turned down. This family friendly showing encourages children to express themselves any way they want, such as talking, dancing or even singing during the show. Before and after the show, guests are encouraged to explore the museum, which will also be sensory friendly. Admission cost is $5 for museum and a movie or $10 for museum, movie and a hot dog meal. New Mexico Women in Film is hosting its first Happy Hour Albuquerque Event. Join NMWIF’s board members and other media industry folks on Friday, Aug. 16 from 4 to 6pm at Apothecary Lounge (806 Central Ave. SE). Happy Hour events in Santa Fe have been very successful, affording both aspiring and professional local filmmakers the opportunity to network and make connections—so it’s nice to see the organization expanding the event into Albuquerque. Reel World: Magic Dance Magic Dance
Movies on the Plaza welcomes Jim Henson’s 1986 fantasy Labyrinth to Albuquerque’s Civic Plaza this Friday, Aug. 16. The puppet-filled musical starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly screens from 7 to 9pm. Admission is free and open to the public. Come early and the family can enjoy the Civic Plaza fountain splash pad. The Imagination Playground is also on hand for kids to play with. Plenty of seating is available, but you are welcome to bring your own chairs or blankets. A concession stand is available if you’re in the mood for snacks. This is a dog- and bike-friendly event.
Reel World: Best In The West Best In The West
Movies in the Mountains returns this Saturday, Aug. 17 with the classic Mae West film She Done Him Wrong. This 1933 adaptation of the Broadway show Diamond Lil (which West wrote and starred in) was a huge hit for West and got nominated for an Oscar as Best Picture. West stars as a wisecracking saloon singer embroiled in the dirty underbelly of New York’s Bowery during the Gay ’90s.
