On Sunday, Jan. 16, Friends of Film, Video and Arts will host its monthly meeting. The topic is “101 things to know about set design.” Industry pros Steve Brown and Christina Bouajila will be there creating an entire set from scratch and sharing much of what they’ve learned. The meeting will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at 9 Point Productions (423 San Mateo NE). The meeting—including social time, work-in-progress screenings and lecture—is free to current FFVA members or $10 for nonmembers.

WildEarth Guardians has announced its very first Eco-Short Film Contest. WildEarth Guardians is asking filmmakers to submit a 30-second to three-minute film addressing an issue that is “near and dear” to the environmental organization. The winning short film will be screened at the Telluride MountainFilm festival in Santa Fe. Deadline for submission is Monday, Jan. 16, at midnight. A panel led by experts in the field will judge all entries. The top five contenders will be notified and invited to attend the Jan. 20 screening of Telluride MountainFilm at Santa Fe’s Lensic Performing Arts Center, where the winner will be announced. Keep in mind, subject matter must be relevant to WildEarth Guardians’ mission to protect and restore wildlife and wild places. Reel World: Duke City Premiere Duke City Premiere
On Saturday, Jan. 15, starting at 7 p.m., the National Hispanic Cultural Center and Latinos in Film will present a free preview screening of the shot-in-New-Mexico film Far From Ascencion. This border-crossing action/drama promises to bring a new twist to the immigrant struggle. The film stars Victor Chavero, Rafael Hernandez and Bryan Levi. It was written and directed by Donavan Kerr.
