The upcoming Santa Fe Film Festival (Dec. 6-9) presents another one of its sneak-preview events. This Friday, Oct. 5, there will be a special screening and reception for the film Without Borders. The event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. at the New Mexico History Museum Auditorium (113 Lincoln, next to the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe). Without Borders introduces audiences to Thanasis (Yorgo Voyagis), a goodhearted Athenian cotton candy vendor who does his best to raise a baby girl after her mother—an immigrant prostitute—abandons her and disappears to America to find her fortune. Years later, mom returns and reclaims her daughter. With no money, no visa and no English skills, Thanasis heads to America to find the child he raised as his own. The film’s writer-director Nick Gaitatjis and several cast members, including Academy Award nominee Seymour Cassel, will be in attendance. Ticket price is $30 and includes screening, Q&A / reception, food and drink.

Instituto Cervantes at the National Hispanic Cultural Center launches another Spanish Contemporary Cinema series this month, spotlighting talented young Spanish directors and actors from the first decade of the 20th century. Screenings will take place every Thursday, from Oct. 4 through Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. at the NHCC’s Bank of America Theatre. The series starts off this Thursday with Azul Oscuro Casi Negro (Dark Blue Almost Black). This comedy-drama concerns a handful of young people as they try to sort out the complications of their romantic relationships. On Oct. 18, it’s the jazz music drama Bajo Las Estrellas (Under the Stars). On Oct. 25, it’s Nómadas (Nomads), a horror drama about a serial killing mechanic who takes revenge on some very mistaken robbers. Nov. 1 brings Ladrones, about a young street thief who falls in love with a middle-class student. Things close out on Nov. 8 with dysfunctional family drama Tres Dies amb la Familia (Three Days with the Family). All films are in Spanish with English subtitles. Join KNME-5 for a free screening of the national PBS “Need to Know” election special, “America By the Numbers With Maria Hinojosa.” The event will take place Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 4th Street SW) in the Bank of America Theatre. The 30-minute film will be followed by a discussion with Hinojosa on how a rising multicultural population may influence the 2012 presidential election. Seating is free but is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
