Veteran Hollywood sound editor Midge Costin explores cinema’s secret ingredient—the power of sound—in her new documentary Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound. The Screen in Santa Fe (1600 St. Michael’s Dr.) is not only showing the film (Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7pm), but is gathering a collection of film industry experts to discuss it afterward. The Screen’s panel consists of Emmy-winning sound engineer David Brownlow (Valley Girl, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Avengers, ”Waco,” “Preacher”), composer Michael Sterns (Chronos, Baraka, Samsara) and Oscar/Emmy-winning composer Dave Grusin (The Graduate, Tootsie, On Golden Pond). O’Neill’s Pub Nob Hill continues its Dinner and a Movie promotion with a month-long salute to ’80s icon John Hughes. It starts on Wednesday, Feb. 5 with a screening of Hughes’ 1985 sci-fi comedy Weird Science—in which high school geeks Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith use their home computer to build the perfect woman (Kelly LeBrock), leading to all sorts of comic chaos. This is followed by 1984’s Sixteen Candles (Feb. 12), 1988’s The Great Outdoors (Feb. 19) and 1985’s The Breakfast Club (Feb. 26). Seating begins at 6pm. All films start at 7pm. Admission is free. Netflix is getting ready to shoot its new period Western feature The Harder They Fall right here in New Mexico. The all-black cowboy flick stars Idris Elba (“Luther,” Thor), is produced by hip-hop impresario Jay-Z and is directed by British singer-songwriter and music producer Jeymes Samuel (better known as The Bullitts). Producers are currently casting for background talent. Townsfolk, soldiers, kids and more (ages 12 to 60) are needed. Casting is for both actors of black/African descent and white/European descent. Filming is scheduled to take place throughout March in and around Santa Fe. Pay is $100 to $175 per day with a possible travel and housing stipend. Prospective actors have until March 1 to apply. Reel World: Destry Reads Again Destry Reads Again
The Bernalillo County Public Library and Friends of the Public Library are teaming up once again to present the annual Books to the Big Screen Film Series. It all starts this Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Main Library (501 Copper Ave. NW). Starting at 2pm audiences can check out John Ford’s impossibly iconic Western The Searchers, starring John Wayne as an angry Civil War vet looking for his niece (Natalie Wood) who has allegedly been abducted by the Comanche. The film is based on Alan Le May’s 1954 novel of the same name. Admission is free and open to the public. Starting next week Books to the Big Screen moves to the historic KiMo Theatre (423 Central Ave. NW) for a string of famous Westerns including Cimarron (Feb. 6), High Noon (Feb. 7), True Grit (Feb. 8) and The Big Country (Feb. 9). The series closes out on Feb. 15 with Shane (at the Juan Tabo Library) and Feb. 22 with Destry Rides Again (at the Special Collections Library).
