On Thursday, April 10, South Broadway Cultural Center’s John Lewis Theater will host A Night of the Arts. A reception, featuring music by folk rock band Wildewood, will be held at 6pm. That will be followed at 8pm by a screening of short films from emerging Albuquerque filmmakers. Selections include Terence Shelly’s “Closure” and “Know Remorse” and Jordan Hoffman’s “Somewhere the Water.” A brief Q&A with cast and crew will follow the screenings. Admission is free. SBCC is located at 1025 Broadway SE.

Reel World: Get Anime-Ted Get Anime-Ted

Fans of Japanese animation should note that Sabaku Con, Albuquerque’s newest anime convention, gets underway this weekend, April 11 through 13. Special guests include voice actors Chuck Huber (“Dragon Ball Z,” “Black Butler,” “Fullmetal Alchemist”) and Colleen Clinkenbeard (Summer Wars, Wolf Children, “One Piece”), American manga artist Armand Villavert Jr. (ZAPT!), award-winning cosplayer Katybear and musician Kazuha Oda. There will be a “Kill La Kill” rave, countless workshops and panel discussions, anime screening rooms and an “Attack on Titan” café (which is a terrifying prospect if you’ve ever seen “Attack on Titan”). All events take place at the Crowne Plaza Albuquerque (1901 University NE).

Reel World: Collaborative Confab Collaborative Confab

New Mexico Women in Film will present a panel discussion titled “The Art and Technique of the Director-Editor Collaboration” on Sunday, April 13. The event will take place at Foxroad Studios (2350 Fox Road, Suite 200, in Santa Fe) from 3 to 6pm. The panel features award-winning director-editor teams Dyanna Taylor and David Leach (La Triste Historia—A Symphonic Celebration of the Day of the Dead), Lisa Lucas and Sarah Gartner (“And the Body Calls the Spirit”) and Amiée Barry Broustra and Shelene Bridge (The Young Ancestors). The event is free to NWIF members and $15 for nonmembers.

New Mexico Lawyers for the Arts and the Albuquerque Film Office are hosting a special workshop on the legal issues of third-party copyrighted works in film and video. Looking for some solid pointers on the legal risks you run in making films and videos? Check out “Sight, Sound and the Law: Common Legal Issues and Solutions in Audio Visual Production” this Saturday, April 12, from 1 to 3:30pm at South Broadway Cultural Center (1025 Broadway SE). It will be presented by Jose Jehuda Garcia, Esq., a writer/producer and a member of the New Mexico State Bar who recently worked as the in-house lawyer for the national cable network Reelz. Cost is $10 for filmmakers and non-attorneys. Students and NMLA members are free.
