Albuquerque’s Latino Film Festival, ¡Cine Magnifico!, is looking for films by and about Latinos and “the Hispanic cultural background as a symbol of unity, richness and a particular way of life.” The last day to submit films for consideration is this Friday, July 5. Submission fees for features, documentaries and short films are $55 standard and $50 for students. New Mexico-made short films may apply using the student fee. Winners whose films have been selected for inclusion in this year’s festival will be notified by July 31. The festival itself takes place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the Guild Cinema this coming Sept. 4 through 8. In only slightly belated celebration of the July 4th holiday, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History Foundation and the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience are sponsoring a screening of the 1996 sci-fi action hit Independence Day. Will Smith, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum lead a ragtag attack force against giant alien spaceships that are wrecking up our planet’s most Instagram-worthy tourist sites. The film screens Saturday, July 6 starting at 7pm inside the NMNH’s DynaTheater (1801 Mountain Rd. NW). Tickets are $10 general admission or $7.50 for Museum Foundation members and AFME sponsors. Skateway Massacre is a low-budget, shot-in-Albuquerque slasher film premiering Saturday, July 6 at 10:30pm at Guild Cinema (3405 Central Ave. NE). The film concerns the closing staff at a roller skating rink who are shutting the facility down for the night, only to find themselves stalked and murdered by “a mysterious figure in their midst.” Much of the film’s cast and crew, including writer-director Daniel Zubiate, are on hand for the screening. The filmmakers behind the indie comedy Phoenix, Oregon are on a nationwide tour (in their own specially branded RV). They pass through Albuquerque on Wednesday, July 10 for some screenings of the film at Guild Cinema (3405 Central Ave. NE). The film stars James LeGros (Drugstore Cowboy, Point Break) and Jesse Borrego (Blood In, Blood Out; Con Air) as a couple of pals in the midst of mid-life crises who seize on a ridiculous but life-changing quest: to quit their terrible jobs, renovate an old bowling alley and serve up “the world’s greatest pizza.” Writer-director Gary Lundgren is on hand to introduce the film and participate in a little Q&A action.
