The State of New Mexico Film Office is sponsoring another New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase. This yearly juried competition is open to local residents only. There is no fee to submit. All films must be 30 minutes or less in length. The Showcase culminates in an Awards Ceremony on May 10 at the KiMo Theatre. Prizes will be handed out to Best in Category (Comedy, Drama, Documentary, Horror, Music Video, Sci-fi/Fantasy and Student), Audience Choice and Wild Card. After the ceremony the winning films will be screened to the public. Reel World: Play Ball Play Ball
The Albuquerque Film & Music Experience Film Series continues at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science’s DynaTheater this Saturday, March 23. Starting at 7pm it’s Penny Marshall’s 1992 comedy A League of Their Own. Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna and Tom Hanks star in this look at a scrappy, all-female baseball team during World War II. Tickets are $10 general admission or $7.50 for Museum Foundation members and AFME sponsors. To get your tickets in advance, go to afmefilmseries.eventive.org/schedule. Reel World: What’s Up, Doc? What’s Up, Doc?
Are you a trained medical professional looking for some excitement in your life? How about becoming a medic on movie and TV sets? The New Mexico State Film Office is hosting a Set Medic Class on Saturday, March 23 from 12:30pm to 4pm at Albuquerque’s Special Collections Library (423 Central NE). To participate you must have, at minimum, a current EMT-B license and a CPR card from the State of New Mexico. This class will not provide medical training for the job, but it will teach you what is required of you as a set medic. This class is free, but you need to register in advance by going to bit.ly/2TKwZgp.
Reel World: Union Made Union Made
Ever wonder what it takes to work in the film industry? IATSE Local 480 is the union representing professional film technicians working “below the line” on TV and movie productions in the state of New Mexico. Below-the-line talent includes lighting and sound technicians, grips, set painters, stagehands, prop manufacturers and more (including those set medics mentioned above). IATSE 480, in conjunction with the State Film Office, hosts a free Educational Speaker workshop on Wednesday, March 27 from noon to 1pm at the Joseph Montoya Building’s Bid Room in Santa Fe (1100 S. St. Francis Dr.). Local 480 President Liz Pecos will be talking about the various ways to get into the union and the various trades they represent.
